Right, less than 4 weeks to go so lets get the ball rolling.

In what will be, for me anyway, the most eagerly anticipated race of the championships, Chamney has laid it down that he is racing the 800 for definite. Good man. Now, will Campbell take on the challenge. Probably depends on how the qualifying attempts go over the next few weeks.
Chamney, who admits there is a very healthy rivalry himself and Campbell

Shall we read between the lines or is that just making mischief;)

Forgot to say, assuming they race who will win? Chamney has the upperhand but I have a sneaking suspicion if Campbell wasn't boxed with 90 to go in Oslo he may have been even closer.

You might know this Tingle..how many times have they one two'd in the nationals and who holds the upper hand.
Either ways it will be class racing...the mens 100m as well with Jason Smyth,id love to see him get a podium finish and then theres a prospect of sub 45 for Gillick on an Irish track.

Maybe even a pacer for Roisisn McGettigan in the steeplechase? i think she has the chance of going very quickly in that event.

While the 800m should be a class race I won't hold out any hopes for Gillick, McGettigan, Cragg and co appearing or doing their favoured event until I see them on the start line. Cork appeared to have produced a list of Irish athletes appearing last weekend without even getting in touch with them. When they're not obliged to take part in the Nationals I'll hold back my breath at seeing the top Irish athletes take part in Ireland for a little while longer. I'm toying with going to Crystal Palace again the week before to see them there instead.

What glorious negativity. Get out and support your Nationals man. Even if Gillick and Cragg aren't there (and we can't be sure they won't), there is a whole lot more to the sport than them. O' Rourke with a pop at the national 100m record, Eileen throwing over 70 again on a Saturday (have you ever witnessed that, pretty impressive), two young high jumpers taking on Adrian O' Dwyer, the womens 800, Smyth pushing Hesh and many many more little things to watch. Many great battles. Jeez, the negativity (even if reasonable sometimes) really gets me. Support your Nationals.

Never said I wouldn't be there. I've got club mates and friends who'll be taking part and I'll be there to cheer them on. My post was in relation to seeing the big guns of Irish athletics. I won't look forward to the possibility of a sub 45 by Gillick at the nationals until I see him line up on the day.

Good point. Santry is a fast track. Hesh set a 200 NR there as did McKee in the 400. If Gillick committed he might run very fast. Lack of competition would be the problem, nobody in the low 46's.

Maybe Gillick in the 200 versus say Smith would be interesting.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,912 ✭✭✭thirtyfoot

Gillick said at the weekend that if he runs Monaco he will only do the 200m. 400 is wide open. Brian Murphy should take it as Gregan is likely to be out.

Report on Eilo from RTE.ie, going for her 9th title.

I hope more people turn up to watch the nationals this year. Its the biggest day in the athletic calendar but the attendances in recent years have been pathetic.

We are in the middle of a running boom but is it wishful thinking to hope that this might result in improved attendances?

There were 5000 people running in the park on Saturday. How many of them will turn up to watch? Its a bit late now but the AAI should think of putting half price admission vouchers in the goody bags at next years adidas 5mile.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,686 ✭✭✭RealistSpy

I think it will be big for some weired reason. I am also delighted that the 100m sprints are changed to Sunday just incase if I can't get saturday off plus resting period between the 200m and 100m.

    .

I think we all should take responsibility.

If everyone who goes also encouraged 2 or 3 of their friends/family/workmates to go then the place would be swelled.

So, how many people have you encouraged to go this year who normally wouldn't go?

For saturday I have 5 definites going but can't go Sunday as the Dubs are in Croker. Sunday I have 9 who are saying they will go but I reckon only 3 will. All in all that should 8 people who normally wouldn't go to the Nationals who will be this season. If everyone brought 1 person that would double the attendence of last season!!!!

I've never been but will be there this time and can't wait. The road relays gave me a real appetite as a spectator and I can't wait. Don't think any of my mates would fancy going though.

if you want a sneaky little cheat to bump the numbers bring the partner (girlfriend / wife) they will go even if no interest then appear to be considerate by telling them to bring a friend or two to keep them company if you are racing or just talking to some the runners you know.:D

I can't see that happening. If I was to ask my OH if she fancied joining me for a weekend of athletics, I reckon I would find myself being attacked with flying objects :D

OKay maybe not so much wives but i know i usually plead the support card for races i runnung. Maybe it just the younger relationships who trying to make an extra effort though ha has worked in the past for me

I love it. When you get older you stop pretending to care about their interests, could be true;)

Maybe it should be a qualifying standard for Nationals. If you are under 25 and want to compete you must bring an other half to spectate.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,686 ✭✭✭RealistSpy

Do you have to make the national standard to compete or anyone over 16? Just curious to know.

Two legs and a set of lungs are the qualification standard.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 699 ✭✭✭DangerMouse27

Have you ever had to qualify to run in either of our national senior championships..indoor or outdoor?
We have a county championships but its kind of redundant, as national leagues are on the following weekend and you then get a 400m field where win is 56 instead of 50 or 49.

Either ways im heading up to Santry, gonna be great no matter who doesnt turn up!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,686 ✭✭✭RealistSpy

Yeh it would be a great chance to get a new PB you never know it might be your day. With this recession am sure plenty will turn up.

Don't think he would have beaten him either way. Chamney is a great athlete and a great character [Flotrack interview was flippin gas!]. Cambell??? I know who I'll be shouting for...

Which do you diagree with - that Chamney has the upperhand or that Campbell got boxed and didn't have a clear run in Oslo?

Sorry Tingle. Read it wrong the 1st time and responded a little too quickly! Thought you were saying if Cambell hadn't been boxed in he would have beaten Chamney in Oslo. A bit too eager for me own good [hence the edit!]

I agree. I think Chamney has all the aces and if they race he will win the 800m. Really hope it happens!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 466 ✭✭thirstywork

It will be intersting to see if they both double up now.Especially with chammney having goten the B standard for the 1500m
I cant see anyother result than a campbell victory.
His last run was a set back but he is such a good racer.
Last year campbell was playing catch up having been injured earlier in the year but i also thinK Chammney has gone up another level.
Still i think Campbell will be seen at his best and will probably do the double again.

Rumor has it a once promising mid-d athlete, known to his friends as the "peoples room wrecker", will be making his comeback at the nationals. Him for the 800 bronze i think!

11.45, or 1.15 if you miss the hammer and 5000mW

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,912 ✭✭✭thirtyfoot

Eilo in the Hammer at 11:45 then another Olympian, Olive Loughnane, in the walk at 12:40, then another Olympian, Gillick, in the 200 at 13:40......

You don't want to miss the hammer. It may not happen this year but last season we had 4 throws over 70m (all from the same woman)!!!!

It will for sure be in the back as they can have a hammer wreck the middle green with sporting Fingal playing there. Its a pitty cause it just doesnt seem the same. I for one will not be missing the hammer or walk last year i think it was one of the best races of the day was Rob Heffernan in the walk, the crowd really got behind him and it was great Id love to see another foto finish from him again that was amazing

Sporting Fingal not playing this week and as far as i know they away next week so maybe they will use it considering it national championships

Anyone know who's doing the 10k on Saturday? Joe Mc, Vinny Mulvey, Paul Mc, Fagan, Mathews, Kenneally????? Anyone know??? I assume Kenneally is doing the 5k after that time he ran last week...him and christie in the 5k would be brilliant with Sean Connolly the dark horse....might be an easy national title in the 10k up for grabs????

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 106 ✭✭brutes

Dont know, most of the named athletes have been off the scene since earlier on in the year, not much between them unless fagan runs!! Hopefully a dark horse from the west who wins it! Its very open for sure.... The 5k sounds like it could be a cracker, some amazing times recently its good to see .

If a competitor I imagine not (entry fee already paid) but as a turnup, well we may have some "large" bills coming down the line so, all donations gratefully accepted;)

It was a tenner a skull at the juveniles with a 2 day pass for 15 lids. We did get a nice program though:rolleyes:
