Ciara Mageean won her heat in the 800m qualifiers today in 2:06.47.
Semis tomorrow and final Friday. Check out:-

Nice one. There seems to be a Cuban girl ahead of the rest on 2:03 and then it's anyones. Getting to the final is the next challenge!

Check out this picture linked. It;s the Kenyan athlete who won the second heat of the mens 1500 (3.45). You are supposed to be 16 or so to run the World Youths. This guy isn't a day younger than i am (25). It makes such a farce of the event.

If this guy is 16 then im Usain Bolt (just for the record i less than 6 foot and white so definitely not him) This is why Africans junior records are very dodgy at best and never can be taken at face value. Sure if we look over to the US and the "HS Sensation" Solomon Haile and the trouble he got himself in

Killian Barry would have been an outside medal prospect also i suppose but didnt throw well by the looks of things 61m and hasnt made the final.

Born african I don't think that dude is 16 no way. Plus plenty of africans change their age don't ask me why.

I presume the faster they appear to be running at a young age the more they stand out as potential for scholarships and funding.

Great run i knew that she had that kinda time in her though i thought running 2.03 would win it. Unreal to have a youth girl run 2.01

She is 17 and has run 2:03, truly amazing. Sonia's 800m record was a good one and better than the 1500 record. She will take that too at the EYOF I'd say. She still has 2 years after this season the in junior group. But the best of all is she has mixed it at the championships and performed. Thats what makes her different I think.

Fastest time by an Irish woman ( of any age) since 2002 and seventh quickest all time by an irish woman

    Quote from the girl herself!!!
I came all this way to Italy to win a medal. I'm more than happy now! I was first after the semi final despite going into the initial competition being the underdog. It is only the second medal for Ireland in the WYC history. Now I will also take part at the EYOF in Finland over 1500m

Absolutely briiliant performance. What I'm most impressed with is the fact she ran 3 quality rounds in a short space of time. This augers well for the future as it is one thing to run a fast race once off but to put 3 of them together in a championship is great

    From the IAAF site http://www.iaaf.org/WYC09/news/newsid=51986.html
Bressanone/Brixen - Ciara Mageean had little expectations when she lined up Sunday in the finals of the girls’ 800m finals, except she wanted to do her best.

A few minutes later and she had won her first international medal, a silver in a personal best 2.03:07 behind a Championships record 2.01.67 seconds by Kenya’s Cherono Koech.

Ciara was 10th in the 1500m finals at the World Junior Championships last year in Poland, and had a previous personal best of 2:05.38 seconds.

And she was delighted she said right after the medal ceremony, “You can never go into a race expecting a medal; you can just go and do your hardest and luckily on the day I was and I am delighted.”

It was a tough race she said with a lot of pushing and shoving adding “but that must be expected at this standard.”

A bit of pushing and shoving would not bother a girl who likes to play camogie, a Gaelic sport that involves a stick and ball.

Other members of her family also play camogie she says but she is the only one to have excelled on the track but this may spur others to get involved.

    Paul Reid for the IAAF

Agreed while it is great to see runner who can produce fantastic times or "time trialers" it is great to see this girl can be a championship runner may her development continue into her senior years hopefully
