Job applications and CV uploads down on Monster???

We put an ad in Monster.ie for a job. So far we received about 5 CV's, not one of them even mentioning our company specifically or even the job specifically. Perhaps two of them have had any experience or even knowledge of what we need.

I would've thought there would be more CV's and perhaps a bit more effort being put into applying for a job. We then spoke with our rep from Monster and she says that job applications and people just posting up their CV's have dropped???? Just doesn't make sense to me. I don't know, maybe the people with type of skill set we need already have jobs.

Odd certainly. There are numerous other boards, a lot for free, I know Recruit Ireland had a special on. Why not try a tool like enigmasearch.com to find them for free? Alternatively, although you didn't mention what skills are required, maybe post an ad on linkedin, or a specific group on linkedin. Stick a tweet up also. The candidates you want no doubt have their own group or board somewhere!
I'm ex recruitment myself, so I know of lots of ways of attracting candidates foc. PM me if I can help further.

I would guess that an awful lot of people dont trust them anymore being perfectly honest...

+1 to above, terrible website. Sometimes when i use it i will display one page of jobs, when i click to go to the second page nothing happens. When i upload a cv it messes up the formating. I usually look for jobs on it and then apply directly to the company or by email and not by using monster to apply.

Op maybe stick contact detail or email to apply directly so that applicants dont have to use monster to apply

what type of person are you looking for? some types don't put their CV on monster.
I'm a recrutier and I find monster applicants to be primarily out of the country , need visas which in this market is hard to get. Recruit Ireland is good but as I said it all depends on what type of person you are looking for.

Couldn't agree more. Crap website and cluttered with fake agency jobs that make the real ones very difficult to spot.

Plus, people are staying put during these recessionary times.

    No me, though. :)

Yes, Monster is awful, especially after their recent overhaul. I hate their overdose of AJAX and generally usage of ASPX as I don't recall any functional and user-friendly site on ASPX (lots on ASP though). The problem with Monster is that, despite its deficiencies and glitches, it is by far the most popular and recognized recruitment Web resource. So it will command higher fees and attract bigger audiences, unfortunately.

In a way it actually makes a lot of sense. Despite the number of people who are unemployed, the vast majority of the labour market still have a job that they want to hang onto. I'd guess that a large majority of the employed workforce have decided to knuckle down and stick with their current job to ride out the downturn. For every extra unemployed person out there searching there'll be many more who still have a job and won't be applying for another any time soon. The situation is probably compounded by the fact that a lot of the extra unemployed (particularly from the construction sector) just aren't qualified for a lot of the jobs out there.

I'm slightly surprised by the quantity of applicants, but not at all by the quality. My general experience of recruitment is that it's always been very difficult to get good candidates for any skilled job. I've also found that a lot of people are extremely poor at CV preparation, applications, etc.

As for Monster, I got put off it in the past and haven't visited it since.

Agree with tha, in the current market, almost everyone who has been in a job for over a year is sticking with it: if they change jobs, they can be laid off for no reason at any time in the first year, and then laid off with no redundancy at any time in the 2nd year. Why risk that if they job you have at the moment is ok.

Something else: however-many-thousand are signing, but a good number of those are actually on reduced hours (3-day weeks), and will be more inclined to stay with the short-hours job and hope that it will grow. Or perhaps they'll even come to enjoy the extra free time, and hope that the job doesn't grow again (assuming money's not too tight).

In the past 3-4 weeks, I've noticed there are more jobs to apply for, and I've also started getting PFO emails (in the months before that, companies weren't even bothering with the PFO). It may just be luck, or it may be a sign that things are getting (a little) better.

thanks everyone for your input. hmm, something to think about on monster.

we found 2 possible people, one's a good fit for the company culture but he's just out of school & we have a tough client that he would need interaction with. the other one, well she might be an ok fit but we are not sure about her fitting in the company...but she's experienced in the one thing that we do need that is lacking in our company once the current person goes. and she would do very well.

we are a very very small market research company, but we have international clients. so everyone in the company does more than just their job description, we need very flexible & creative people. its not the traditional market research but a lot of it is tracking progress for big international firms and coming up with innovative ways to display trend analysis.

again thanks everyone for your response, good to know.

I totally agree....I am a computer technician with lots of experience but the job descriptions on Monster are soooo off-putting...

They need to drop all that ridiculous JARGON! Just reading all that rubbish makes me ill. See below for a sample of a job I could probably do, but would NEVER apply for based on the following Responsibilities description:

    Responsibilities:

    · Prime for common Internal lab infrastructure

    · System State, Network//Tape/Disk backup procedures, Network Installations, Configuration and management of servers Firewall maintenance, network security and configuration.

    · Manage and implement proactive monitoring of key lab infrastructure

    · Design, manage and support the growing network infrastructure

    · Acquire detailed solution level working knowledge across all components and features of UC implementations. This includes the ability to configure and administer all components to implementation level, and to understand operation to protocol level.

    · Collaborate with internal and external groups including Design,

    · Troubleshoot solution and system level issues. This includes the ability to debug solution level issues through trace analysis.

    · Assessment of solution implementations. This includes the assessment of appropriate test and tools requirements and capacity requirements.

    · Document solution implementations

    · Prepare and deliver presentations, tech transfers and webinars to internal and external audiences.

    · You will be required to act as technical prime for certain projects you are involved with
What a pile of gobbildy gook! ..Get real, job-posters/monster!

To be honest I blame the employers. They have become a little too princely during the recession, looking for absurdly specific qualifications, so you get what you deserve frankly. I could do your job but I probably wouldn't fit into the silly concentration of so called 'skills'.

I also have to say -1 for Monster. I cannot stand websites which use Ajax. It's a horribly over-engineered website.

Have you tried putting it on FAS?

I was looking at some recent job stats and FAS gets 8 times more visitors than Monster.

Fas is another terrible website. Irishjobs made theirs worse recently too.

The job spec tends to come from the Employer, not Monster. Monster is a huge tool for Employers. If you are interested in obtaining a job, put your cv on the database which companies tend to use more than the advertising..
