Driver Loft

Might be done already! And sorry if it has and for my long-winded approach! ;)

What kinda loft are you guys hitting on your "Big Stick"?
I tend to hit the ball very high with every club in the bag!
So when I happened to be in a golf shop 2 years ago, and spotted a 2nd Driver, with a lower loft than my 10.5 degrees, I decided to pick it up and try it out!
Its a Titleist 975J with a stiff shaft and 8.5 degress of loft - which didnt really agree with me at first - but none of the sticks would, at that stage :D, and it was hitting slices at almost 90 degress with it - plenty of lost balls!!
Stuck with the old girl and shes coming good for me of late and Im still hitting them fairly high, but consistently straight and long - if any one knows St. Margarets or Corrstown, cleared the tree on the corner of the 11th in St.M and the tree on the 16th in Corrstown!

I know the 975J comes in 7.5 too - was wondering if it would give me more distance off the tee? Dont think I'd change from that model for the sake of the change of loft - cos im hitting it well - but if i sourced the same model in 7.5 would be interesting to see the effect it would have on the trajectory, carry and roll!

I know 9.5 / 10.5 is avg, but lots of people have said, jezz your using an 8.5 - its it that uncommon?
What kinda loft are you folks hitting?
And have you ever lowered it with success - how low have you gone (with or without success)?
    Experiences please!

Sorry to rain on your parade but unfortunately the 975J is now illegal for competition use. Its almost the first one on the list here:

Also, the lower the loft of the driver, the more side spin it will impart and hence the more slice/hook you will get. Rather than just going for a lower loft, have you tried a lower launching driver? I changed from a 10.5 Ping G10, to a 10.5 Ping Rapture V2 and I get a completely different ball flight. Also some shafts will launch the ball lower than others, the ProLaunch Red from Gallfoy is one of these. The simple answer is to try a few before just saying I need less loft.

    Regards
    Ian

Well try as many as you can get your hands on!

I'm finally settled on a driver KZG SP400 , 14 deg loft and i800 nova tech shaft!

This baby gets me down the fairway and with a good ball flight...250-265yards which is good enough for me.:)

I know the 11th at St.Mag....that quite a good drive actually..cutting the corner over the large tree!!! good stuff!:)

To the best of my knowledge not all 975J drivers are illegal, only those with the HCr on the face are.

Wow, I never realised so many main stream drivers are illegal for competition use. How does that happen?
I would have though the developers would have to pass the "conformity" issue before going on to sell openly in the shops.

They used to be legal but then they introduced a max value for COR (i think thats it anyway, its a measure of the amount of energy the club head passes to the ball). As a result a lot of "old" drivers are illegal!

That's not the 975J in the link, it's the J.VS H.CR, a different driver which was released at the same time as the L.FE H.CR.

I had a Golfsmith 10.5 degree head, with a stiff shaft that was only 44.5 inches long. It think the closed face added to the loft and as a result I was getting wicked high flight. Ended up with an inferiority complex and thought about giving up the game because I was so short off the tee.

I got my hands on Motore F1 (Stiff) which I was told by a local club pro could not be used in anything other than a Taylormade R9.

I stuck it into a Yonex Nanospeed Cyberstar 9 Degree head and it works fine. I've got a much lower flight now with a penetrating trajectory.

Its all down to personal preference and what type of flight characteristics you are trying to achieve.

Mine doesnt have the HCr stampped into the face - so im guessing its still legal - good job I didnt snap it in half!!
Damn if it is illegal, because I'm really liking it - but then again if it is illegal, I have an excuse to buy a up-to-date driver, with all the new technology - so she cant give out then!! LOL

Surely a closed face would reduce loft and give you a lower, right to left ball flight with more roll?
