Word documents have developed own mind

I know this is very probably a pretty basic issue (but, computer-wise, I'm pretty basic too!). If anyone can give me a tip on how to sort it, I'd be very grateful....

Basically, since yesterday, whenever I either open an existing Word document (which used to be fine) or start a new one, it automatically has an odd format.... no easy way of describing it: there is a dot in between every word and each sentence begins and ends with a symbol that looks like a "p" turned backwards and the "o" part of the "p" partly blacked-in.... does that make any sense? I tried to copy a section into this box, but it reproduced itself fine here.... I'm very confused.

I wouldn't be too bothered about it ordinarily except it's my girlfriend's dad's computer - he wants it back tomorrow and he already thinks I'm a complete idiot as it is.

    Anyone got any ideas???? Please....

Just open the word document and pres CTRL + SHIFT + 8. You just turner on Show/Hide. You can also press the paragraph button to the left of the Zoom option

It sounds like you accidentally clicked the 'show all' option - it reveals formatting marks. Click on the button that looks like the ¶ in the Standard toolbar to hide them again.
