Audi A4 1.6 - thoughts/opinions/things to look for?

A neighbour kindly gave me a lend of an A4 he's selling while I'm getting the insurance sorted after my crash last week. It's a 99 1.6 with 104k on the clock and I must admit, I'm enjoying driving it.

The only faults I can find with it so far are the plasticy dash and the centre console which is pretty damaged. Anyone know a ballpark figure for getting a centre console replaced (breakers yard parts or new)?

Any thoughts / opinions on the car in general?

at that age/price level, I actually like the A4 1.6 - not as risky as a TDI, and around the same price as a Passat.

you'd need to be more specific about the bit you want for the interior.

Not a bad car with decent amount of room in it.
However, the 1.6L engine certainly won't give you that wow factor because the car is quite heavy for an engine that size.
Decent enough for school runs and shopping.

Found a pic of the part I mean - imagine it'd be tricky enough to replace...

shouldn't be too diufficult, remove the gearknob and gaitor, and then chec for screws/bolts should be straight forward. maybe removing the seats will be necessary. maybe not. shouldn't be difficult either way

try and get a replacement centre console with an armrest.

Id go for a 1.8T or a tdi. Then again, if you enjoy driving the 1.6, go for it. Very low powered though

I'm coming from a 1.4 5 door Civic so it actually has a little more pick-up at low revs and would keep me at cheap(ish) insurance / tax / mpg...

Ive driven the 1.6cc and 1.9tdi ( both 1997) and found the 1.6 far more peppy (and refined ).

Nice cars to drive and which have dated well.
