Last night i saw a guy on a bike acting suspiciously in my estate, he left after a few minutes but found out today that later in night my neighbours brand new ford s max which they had only brought home from garage YESTERDAY was stolen. To add insult to injury there may be a problem with the insurance and the 38k they paid may be in jepordy. Anyway just wondering how they got into and started a new car like this? Would they have had to get the keys from inside house? Or do they have more sophisticated technology to get into car?

It'd be hard to the point of impossible to take that car without either the keys or a low-loader.

This is why living in the countryside>>>>>>>>living in the city. If i had to worry about my car/everything being stolen all the time i would go mad. The amount of cars you hear of being stolen/damaged in Dublin and Limerick is ridiculous.

I would imagine they got the keys from somewhere as cars cant be hotwired anymore.

It is very suspicious that it was stolen a day after buying it.

Depends where you live, TBH - some parts of Dublin are safer than some rural areas.

i am by no means a car thief but i reckon it would be easier to rob a car in a rural area.

Also there is more people and cars in the city so by law of averages of course you will hear more stories of cars stolen coming from cities

Try leaving your house and car keys hanging out of the front door overnight in those 'safe' areas of Dublin.

Yeah, everyone should move out of Dublin and into the country.

Makes no odds where you live anymore,I had some info passed on to me off the record that theres an insider passing info out from the register office in Shannon of cars on a wanted list,IE High powered Beemers,335d,535d,m5 and m3 Mercs and Jag's etc,Things such as S max's and the like come up every so often too by all accounts,Havent been talking to the Garda in recents times but I must get another chat to him soon for an update.

Apparently they know the guys doing it,They just cant seem to catch them.

But yes,It can happen anywhere,To say just Dublon and limerick is Narrow Minded,I live in a quiet area,No fuss,No scumbags,The guy less than 1 mile away had 2 535d's taken on him in recent times,Electric gates,Cameras,Alarms, they still got it.And my area is no sihthole.

Why would you want to do that anywhere?

Several times I've returned to my car(s) in the drive or on the street to find I've left it unlocked overnight - never touched.
There's over a million people in the greater Dublin area - its not like we're all barracaded from the marauding hordes FFS.

I left my car unlocked on my driveway last year and found it had been gone through the next morning. Only lost my handfree yoke but they went through the glove compartment, boot etc.
Didn't put it down to "living in Dublin" though, just "living".

Modern immobilizers make it very, very difficult to steal a car without the keys.

    My guess is that

    a. They keys were taken from inside the house
    b. Someone else had a key

If the car was brand new, I'd be straight down to the dealership asking questions and I'd make sure I had all of the keys to begin with. However, someone in possession of the car before may have made extra copies of the key and coded it with the immobilizer code.

There's no need to worry about it, that's what insurance is for, and the insurance companies aren't worried either!

Example. A brand new 535d saloon costs about €80k here. How likely is this car to be stolen from outside your house in a dodgy part of Dublin?

    FBD insurance quotes -
40 year old, Male, Dublin, 4 years no claims:
Car Value Third party TP Fire and Theft 'Fire and Theft' only Chance
    09 535d €80k €268 €1060 €792 approx 1 in 100
    02 Focus 1.6L €3.5k €252 €353 €101 approx 1 in 35

For cars less than a year old FBD will replace with brand new car so there's every chance that a stolen 535d will cost FBD €80k plus to replace. For older cars insurance companies limit their liability to the 'book' value of the car. Based on the extra cost of the Fire and Theft cover for the 535d, FBD think that there's only a 1 in 100 chance that this car will be stolen in its first year unlike your typical run of the mill car.

Owners can sleep easy at night :D

Then why don't they stake them out?

They have been for months,But these guys are apparently losing them when they go to work.
They have also followed them to the UK to watch them do advanced driving courses and whatnot.
Still cant get them in the act.
