    Hi folks,
    i caught my sister using Limewire to download somethings the other week and i hit the roof and told not to cause of the whole eircom music industry thing rule. Not to mention the fact that anything from limewire will more than likely have virsues packed in it.

    Anyway i told her we'd get a huge fine for her messing with limewire to scare her off she didnt seem to care or understand that..anyway.

    I looked up the ports used by limewire and ive blocked them i think..ive also made her unable to access limewire by denying her permission to the limewire folder.

    What other steps can i take to stop her landing us in trouble? I Told her to buy her music, she laughed at me which i guess i would have done a few years ago.

    Tie her up!

    Some Routers have bandwidth management on them. If she is on a machine different to yours, fck her up so its so slow it totally demoralizes her and forces her outdoors to socialise, probably to end up getting involved in drugs etc

    Well, one way around it is to uninstall limewire and create her a limited user account (one without admin privaledges) and add a admin password to your account, she can't re-install limewire and to install any programs she will need you or another admin to install them for her, sounds a bit harsh, but gives you more control to likely prevent this happening again,

    To sort it i would tell windows not to allow the limewire exe to run at all
    that would sort it for good even if it was wiped and reinstalled.
    might seem a bit extreme but it will put a stop to limewire.:D

    Heres how to do it on different versions of windows:eek:

    Windows XP Pro & Vista Business/Ultimate/Enterprise
    1. Start-> Control Panel
    2. Administrative tools-> Local security policy
    3. Click on Software Restriction Policy-> Action (at the top)-> create new restriction policies
    4. Right-click additional rules (on the right side)-> new path rule
    5. Click Browse and navigate to C:\Program Files\limewire\ and double-click limewire.exe
    6. Set the security level to Disallowed-> apply-> ok

    Windows Vista Home Premium
    1. Go to C:\Program Files\limewire\limewire.exe
    2. Right-click limewire.exe-> properties-> security->
    3. Under the group or username SYSTEM click edit
    4. Put a checkmark under the DENY column for "read and execute"

    Windows XP Home: ( XP Pro does not require you to boot into safe mode)
    1. Boot into Safe Mode (tap F8 repeatedly after you restart the computer)
    2. Log in using the Administrator account
    3. Go to C:\Program Files\limewire\
    4. Right-click limewire.exe-> properties-> security-> advanced
    5. Under the Permissions tab click on SYSTEM under Permission entries:
    6. Edit-> Traverse Folder / Execute File-> deny-> ok ->apply-> yes -> ok-> ok
    7. Reboot the computer into Normal Mode (start-> shutdown-> restart)
    not just for limewire will work for any program you want to stop running for good.
    If this doesn't work you can try punching her in the head:rolleyes:

    The guy wants to know how to block Limewire. Any posts boasting about your warez download capability, or alternate sources of warez, will be deleted.

    I assume these measures can also be used if the sister tries to use Bittorent?

    I had this problem with my sister. I told her I'd take a screwdriver to it if she ever installed limewire again. The fact that I'd probably do it means she listened to me.

    make a small shut down file and stick it in the start up folder in start menu

    everything will still start up perfect and all but when the start up folder kicks in it will shut down :)

    this can be deleted very easily too so it dosent stick

    tell her it was a virus !

    just go into the start up folder fast and right click delete ! but dont show her how you got rid of it.. say it was really serious !!! could be completely broke next time.

    it will scare the **** out of her :rolleyes:

    Is it just me or does there seem to be a big over-reaction by the OP!?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 645 ✭✭✭StopNotWorking

    I would just let her download as much as she wants, the computer will be wrecked with viri far quicker than eircom even getting a sniff of something from your connection. Let her moan about having no computer then. Or better yet plant a virus yourself. Change her bebo pictures to ones of peoples private parts and blame it on that. Give her a serves you right and it should stop her.

    Or just give her a restricted account with no limewire client installed. She wont be able to install anything on a limited account so she should be stuck.

    Can ericom fine you for using limewire or something??

    Never heard this before and have never heard of anybody getting fined for it.

    I agree. A bit of a over reaction by the OP.

    Hold on never read the post proberly. My bad.

    But I still think its a over reaction. Everybody will be downloading for free (legally or illegally) in some way soon enough me thinks so i really cant see the problem with downloading.

    I agree, I wouldn't want any relative of mine using Limewire for illegal downloading. They should be using Vuze now with built-in safe peer IP blocking. :D
    I don't think that's the issue.
    I tried limewire a couple of years ago and many so called kids movies were renamed pornos.
    How low can you get?

    Everyone should be worried about pirating. I am, sure I hardly ever pirate stuff anymore. Eircom put that out to shut up the music industry. But that in no way means they wont take action when they feel like it. People are made examples of, and eircom are no exception to the rule on that.

    Yeah... A friend of mine spent the best part of a week downloading Charlie and the chocolate factory ages ago and got some dirty asian porn instead... Was a jackpot for me!:p

    I don't think the OP is overreacting at all... If its a shared computer they have every right to stop the sister from using a virus riddled piece of software

    As mentioned above, some routers have the option to block certain sites, ports, bandwidth limitations, and timed outages.

    That would essentially mean you are blocking your own download. None of this port monitoring/blocking software does what people think. It does not mask your download. Your pirated data passes through 5-10 servers owned by your ISP. You think they dont see what traffic they let through their machines?

    Peerguardian and software like it will only warn you of port scans etc. It blocks hardly anything.

    Exactly the movie I'm talking about. Luckily I skipped through it to see if the end was there. I put me off downloading for good.

    If you do do something like this then tell her it's a virus. Take a week to "Fix it". A week without bebo will have her suffering some serious withdrawal symptoms. She'll never want to get another virus again.

    No I don't think the OP is over-reacting. The sister might be downloading free music + films from Limewire but if the copyright people come knocking, it's the person in whose name the internet connection is that will get into trouble.

    Eircom's already stated that if a record company comes to them with the IP address of a customer who's been downloading music illegally, they'll sing like a canary. In addition, 5 or 6 weeks ago someone posted here about getting a Copyright Infringement Notice from UTV.

    I honestly don't know how someone comes to the attention of the authorities for this. Perhaps it's people who are downloading several gigabytes of stuff who attract the attention. Or maybe it's just someone who was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Either way, it's turning into a riskier business than it was.

    They wont come knocking. Think of the amount of people that illegally download. More or less everybody with an internet connection. Now what would be the odds on the copyright people (If they actually exist??) choosing you..................Very slim!! You would have to be one very very unucky person.......(Knowing my luck now il get a nice call in the morning from the copyright people)

    enter 127.0.0.1 in the hosts file against www.limewire.com and her computer will not be able to find the offending site.
