    Hi,

long time mac user here looking for an online file storage
    solution.
What I'm looking for is a service with a desktop program that I can just
drop my files into so they upload straight away

    Any one got any ideas?

    Many thanks!

Dropbox. 2GB of free storage, more available if you pay for it. If you like PM me your email & I can send you an invite, it'll give us both an extra 225MB free.

iBackup is nifty. It supports both automated backup as well as being able to be mounted as a drive. It keeps snapshots of files so if you need to restore an older version of a file you can.

Files are accessible on Windows machines as well, as well a web interface, you can backup multiple computers if you wish. Well worth the $10/mo IMO. IIRC you can create a "public" folder for the web if you want to publish files for others to access online.

I should probably mention that Dropbox does all of this too, except for the automated backup (although you could use an Applescript or Automator to set it to back stuff up at a certain time.) I also forgot to say that it has an optimised web interface for the iPhone/iPod touch (but it should be accessible from any smartphone - it works fine on my Nokia E51).

How much storage does iBackup give you, SouperComputer?

    Thanks!

drop box looks exactly like what I had in mind so I'll download that.

PM sent for the extra MBs! :)

I'm using dropbox for all my college work, it's a great solution.

Yea it seems pretty nifty alright.....iBackup starts at 10Gb, however the snapshots do not count against this.

10 gb at $10 per month; Mobile me is €79 for 20 gb these days.

Horses for courses as they say...... Mobileme is not an automated backup solution nor does it support snapshots. If you just want an online drive, thats fine. If you need a professional backup solution, iBackup or its peers are more suitable IMO.

Would also recommend SugarSync which I use to sync folders across two macs, and also access them via an iPhone app when away from the desk. Has a basic web client too.

Thing I like most is that you don't need a designated dropbox folder; instead you keep your existing folder layout. 2 gig of storage for free, with more for referrals.

David Pogue from the NYT explains it much better.
