hi all, have braces and apparently the tension has contributed to one of my front teeth going grey as there is nerve damage :( Seen my ortho-he said i need to wait two weeks to see if it dies off fully and if so i will need a root canal and bleaching to return tooth to normal. He hopes the color change is just from the nerve bleeding and it may heal itself over the next couple of weeks if the blood supply improves... Anyone ever experience this before? thanks

i doubt the orthodontics caused the problem, the tooth was probably previously traumatized and you don't remember. my experience is it is best to do Root canal treatment sooner rather than later, as it needed to bleach the tooth anyway, and the fact the greyness may get worse the longer you leave it.
best not to worry, go to your dentist and seek advice

thanks for the reply- yes the ortho said the brace could only have aggravated a problem that was already there. he suspects as i have signs of wear on that tooth that i grind my teeth in my sleep. :( i have to wait two weeks and he will refer me to a surgeon who will do it that week so hopfully it wont go black in the mean time! do you know will this delay my ortho work much? forgot to ask him as i was in such a panic over the front tooth!

no, i wouldn't think so, but i would probably disengage the wire from the tooth until the root treatment is completed. the wires may have to come off completely should a rubber dam be used when doing the the root canal and then put back on after
