ESPN Football launches on the 3rd of August. Does anyone know if Chorus will charge us cable users for the channel or will they do the nice thing and give it to us in Freeview?

Not a hope in hell of UPC offering this as a free channel.

That's the joy of the free market. You can choose if you want it or refuse to have it.

But I can't can I? I have an addiction to football and have to see all the games I can. I think they are also showing the Europa League games in which my team will be playing.

Well if you have an addiction, maybe they're trying to help you. Presumably its only TV football you're addicted to.

You pay UPC, UPC takes a cut and pays ESPN, ESPN take a cut and pay premier league, premier league take a cut and pay clubs, clubs take a cut and siphon the rest off in to some neanderthals bank account.

    Feel better now? :)

Anyway, I'll leave it at that an let it go back on topic. If you want to reply to me, please PM

Apologies to the board for dragging this out

ESPN Football can only be carried by UPC if ESPN have the rights to show EPL in Ireland - Setanta Ireland state they have the rights.

Otherwise the only sport it can offer and charge for is SPL

In the UK ESPN football is available as an add on to Sky Sports or stand alone for 33.3% additional charge (EU will not be happy)

Rumour has it that ESPN America may shortly go off UPC but with no word from UPC and Setanta still in a state of flux it could all change within days

Seems ESPN has the rights for Ireland too now.
The English Premier League has sold the live rights formerly held by Setanta for coverage of its games in the Irish Republic to ESPN.

ESPN has been awarded two packages of rights containing a total of 46 matches that were available for season 2009/10.

just to avoid any confusion, ESPN. will not be available for free to Sky viewers.
    from mediaguardian.co.uk 08/06/2009:

"The new channel, which will simply be called ESPN, will launch on 3 August ahead of the start of the new Premier League season on 15 August.
For residential customers, ESPN will be available on a premium subscription basis, for £9 a month to Sky Sports subscribers and for £12 a month to other Sky customers."
so at sky's exchange rates it should be at least double that price for Irish customers. Given the confusion as to who holds the rights in Ireland, it would be wrong to assume that it will be available here.
I also seems that Sky will provide production facilities for the channel which will further fuel conspiracy theories about the demise of Setanta.

Poor Setanta didnt tell me that today! See email from customer service today.

Please accept my apologies for any inconvenience this matter has caused for you.

"We are currently working with various sporting organisations to bring the best of the sporting action to the package. In the mean time we will continue to show top live action including Magners League Rugby, GAA coverage, Formula 1, Champions League, Europa League and much, much more.
We apolgise for the delay in contacting our customer's in relation to the content that will be available going forward however, we are still in negotiations with the FA, UFC and various other sporting organistions to secure broadcasting rights for the forthcoming season. I can confirm that we will be contacting all of customer's once we have all of our sporting content rights secured.
Upon review of our confirmed content, you can simply decide whether or not you would like to remain a Setanta Sports customer. If you decide that the package is not for you, a simple phone call will enable us to arrange cancellation of your account"

That relates to the rights Setanta UK had to show games in the Rep of Ireland (similar to the way Sky have rights to show in both GB and Ireland)

The Setanta Ireland rights (effectively the 3pm Saturday fixtures) are seperate and are still with Setanta. These games cannot be shown in the UK, so can't be shown on a channel like Sky Sports or ESPN that broadcasts in the UK

Premier league are to re advertise the 3pm Saturday Games - Setanta does not hold the rights after all.

Thus at the moment for ROI:
    Sky have 4 packages (Sat 12.00 +Sun+midweek)
    ESPN have 2 packages(Sat 5.15 + Mon 8pm)
To be announced - Sat 3pm games

Also ESPN is to replace ESPN america with the new 'ESPN' to include the best of ESPN America & EPL

How much will it cost in subscriptions to watch EPL this year ? -and is anyone going to pay the money ?

I certainly wont be paying for Sky so that means I wont be paying for ESPN.

I'd imagine the fact they bought the IRish rights, and the fact ESPN Ameria is currently on UPC, that the revised ESPN will be available as a stand alone channel for UPC customers

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 28,128 ✭✭✭✭Mossy Monk

I wont be paying UPC either.

well upc ireland sell espn america as part of the setanta package :( so most likely espn will be sold as part of setanta. now i got rid of setanta as they lost, well, everything. €18 for nothing basically. but if they add ESPN [ a channel owned by disney!! ] to the setanta package [which is setanta sports 1 only ] for €18 ill go fooking mad!

Quick Question: ESPN Ireland - will it be shown on UPC Basic Pack not Digital or not???

    Thanks

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 88,972 ✭✭✭✭mike65

Its a subscription channel! digital only,

Or am I wrong? Can't belive it'll be free on the Setanta Ireland slot.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 28,128 ✭✭✭✭Mossy Monk

ESPN Ireland? Where did that come from?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 88,972 ✭✭✭✭mike65

I'm completely out of the loop since going FTA, do Setanta Ireland exist anymore?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 28,128 ✭✭✭✭Mossy Monk

Yes. Setanta Ireland and Setanta Sports 1 still exist. There has been no announcement made about an ESPN Ireland channel though.

No announcement, that's correct. Its probably safe to presume that it will be simply ESPN UK extended to Ireland, now that they have the Irish rights for the Premier League..

I thought they had won the UK rights.

And setanta Ireland still have the Irish rights to the premier league.

No. ESPN have all Irish rights for games Setanta had last year with the exception of Saturday 3pm games

Setanta have 33 games next season.

Yeah, that's what he was saying. Setanta have 33 3pm Saturday matches, but ESPN have the rights to all the other time slots, e.g. Saturday evening etc.

Rang the sales on upc this morning and they said they don't have it now and its not in the piple line to sell the channel. Now that UFC is going to be on it, there will be alot of pissed off people if upc cannot carry this channel. Virgin in the uk carry it surely upc can strike a deal?

there is absolutely no connection between the two. I will be surprised if they do not carry it. Afterall ESPN do hold the Irish rights to different sports.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,663 ✭✭✭JoeyJJ

What I mean is that Sky aren't the only carrier of the channel in the UK however at the moment they are in Ireland.

I flicked around last night and noticed a re-alignment of some channel numbers - ESPN AMerica is no longer available 'for free' on Sky platform - so I need to call Sky to get this added onto my packages? Anyone know how much extra? Thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,091 ✭✭✭carbsy

Correct me if I'm wrong but for people living in Ireland, Setanta Ireland have rights to 40 odd Prem games and Sky have the rest so why the need for ESPN? I thought ESPN would only be of use to UK residents. ????????

€12 if you are a Sky Sports subscriber, €16 if you are not.

Setanta have 3pm games, Sky do not have the rest. ESPN have the UK and Irish rights to Saturday evening and Monday night games.

Why would they put in freeview when sky are charging €12 per month?

Its not like espn will just give them the channel free

I read on the RTE website that Setanta Ireland had rights to close to 40 Premiership games. There aren't that many Saturday 3PM games in a season though.
