AFAIK, there is no such thing as an "I.T. Teacher" in the majority of Irish schools. The Dept. don't make much provision for the encouragement of I.T. skills amongst our young population!

you need a HDip to teach at second level, but most people teaching IT at second level don't have IT qualifications or did a little bit as part of their degree. IT is not an exam subject so it is very low down on the list of priorities in a school. It's a filler subject on the timetable for many teachers and is often farmed out to teachers who teach business/maths/science who have some experience of computers.

There is limited work in second level at PLC level, but schools generally don't look for IT teachers, they will look for a Science, Maths and IT teacher or something along those lines. I teach a lot of PLC IT subjects and have an IT qualification but I'm a Science and Maths teacher first.

Schools will always want to hire teachers with an exam subject and I can't see it changing until IT is made into an exam subject which isn't going to happen any time soon.
