Hi, I have recently started receiving income from a foreign company. I want to resigter as self employed as i am not an employee there or anywhere else and they contract the work out for me. However I won't be working for anyone else, and they have made me a contractor for their own tax reasons! I have filled out the tax registration form TR1 however do I register as 'Sole trader' or 'other'? I guess I am a sole trader even if not in the traditional sense - i am providing legal services & advice to them.

    Thanks

So long as you aren't going to be earning over $75,000 per annum, I'd say you're OK but as ever, ask a qualified accountant.

So long as you get (and keep) wage slips or remittances for your invoics for work done, that should sort out your obligations to the taxmen

Mmm I get paid into a foreign account too, I guess I could just register as unemployed and get the dole :d, no I wouldnt do that... So are you saying I dont need to register as self employed as long as I declare the income on self assessment. I want to declare it because I may be entitled to part time benefit because of the short hours I work

Have you considered your VAT position? Are you providing services to the overseas company (which may be outside the scope of VAT), or to a company (or individuals) based in Ireland (where, if you are above the registration limit, you would need to charge Irish VAT)?
