Contemplating doing first IM next year.
5 or 6 fellow club members are signing up today for Ironman Austria 2010.
I sweat a lot and burn very easy.
I'd like to do Austria as I'd have plenty of people to train with but I'm concerned about how hot it might get.
Perhaps I'd be better off doing Ironman UK although then I'd have no-one to train with.
Anybody have any advice or recommendations on
    A. IronMan Austria - does it get hot, how hot?
    B. Does anyone know where IronMan UK will be in 2010?
    C. Any other good recommendations on a good first Ironman bearing in mind my concerns.

    THANKS

Cant answer all your questions but from what I know you could probably mark Nice or IM France off your list. Its notoriously hot down there for the race and some of the run times from this years race reflect it was no different.

Some of the 'Challenge' Series events look interesting. Roth, Copenhagen and Barcelona might appeal. I know the Barcelona event is new(ish) and is at the end of September I think which may meaner cooler weather ... and a longer time for training during next summer.

Just a note, I know Thorbjorn Sindballe has somewehat similar problems due to his large frame - he's 6'4. I believe he has combatted this by wearing long sleeved top and shorts which are almost all white, but again this is only going to help you so much in extreme heat.
Just chedcked his website out there, seems he's just retired due to a misfunctioning heart valve :(

Doh! Ironman Austria opened this morning and is sold out already, so gotta look elsewhere now.....

Must look in to those Challenge series altho if I'm gonna do one, I think I'd like to do an official Ironman event, silly I know but there you go.

Must check out that website for that Sindballe guy, thanks! Was gonna look in to long sleeved spf clothing anyway...

Although not part of the Ironman series aren't the Challenge series races just as equal?

The all-time record was set in Roth, which is now part of the Challenge events but I think it was an Ironman event when the record was set. If that time is beaten in a Challenge race would it stand as an Ironman world record? Similarly, is qualification to Kona possible from a Challenge race?

Is Ironman a trademark or an actual distance for an event? Both 'Challenge' and 'Ironman' cover the same distance but I'd hate to go to all the trouble of completing a Challenge race and not being able to say I've completed an Ironman...

Ironman and Challenge are both Iron distance events. Ironman is a heavily protected trademark. The attraction to Ironman events for many triathletes is that each race has a number of spots up for the famous Ironman world championship held in Kona in Hawaii each year . Although there are many arguments otherwise this is where Triathlon was born over 30 years ago, a couple of runners, cyclist and swimmers decided who was the fittest and the winner would be named "ironman". After Kona i guess Roth (a challenge series event) would be the most famous iron distance event.

Most people seems to want to do a branded Ironman event, which is totally understandable (many get an m-dot tattoo), people with a couple under their belt seem as happy with the challenge series. Both events are very well organised by all accounts.

if you want to know more about ironman check out this weekly podcast, http://www.ironmantalk.com/Podcast.html

What are peoples thoughts on this?

very personal. I think they look good but not sure if i would get one, i seen a guy a a running race recently, he had three/four of them around his calf each one with the flag of each country he did it in (within the m-dot), looked good.

In a race recently i went by a guy with one on his calf, i was struggling and it def gave me lift. I must say they are getting quite popular, they are usually well flagged as the owners are decked out in Ironman Gear!

When I was standing watching my mates do it on Sunday (9:02 and 9:15) it was 35 degrees.

Exactly why I was watching them run and not running myself is a long story for some other day.

I have signed up for Austria next year, did not realise it was that hot. Last year I did IM France in Nice which was 35C+ at least I got some good tri-suit tan lines. This year I am doing Eireman which there may be more people locally training for this and less likely to be warm.
IM UK they normally announce in the week beforehand when and where the next race will be, but this is the first time up north so they may delay this.

I would have thought if IMUK is a success in Bolton this year they'll stick with it for 2010. Chellenge Barcelona in September might be an option if you're not too hung up on doing an M-Dot race. I've heard it said that an autumn race is good as all your longer rides etc. will be in the summer months with longer hours of daylight. I would have thought IMUK in August would not be dismilar to Ireman or Eireman in terms of the chances of cooler weather. However, I got sunburnt in Waterford and Kilkee this year , so it shows with all this global warming you're not guaranteed to get cool weather anywhere

Good to hear there's other people out there who'll have the same kind of year as me. There's actually about 7 or 8 from Waterford signed up for it yesterday.

Would be interested to hear a bit more detail about how your friend got on, particularly about the cycle route and the hills......

HAvent actually talked to her yet but u can do athlete tracker online. Her splits were 1 hour 16 for swim, 7 hours 7 bike and 5 hours 43 for run. I'm thinking of doing Dublin Marathon in Oct to encourage getting miles up.
