Ordered an E_sata PCI card for my desktop from Komplett to run an external HDD caddy, on opening the box it didn't include the e_sata cable. (Needed two) went down to a local computer shop in Dunlaoghaire and was quoted e20 for just one of these cables

No way I was paying that and ended getting it for e5.99 from a supplier in Tallaght. Who would be stupid enough to pay these silly prices for basics? Should we name and shame? :D

let me guess, its a purple shop beside the laundrette?

Shops like that survive on 2 things. Ignorance and nessessity

People who dont know the value of something (e_sata cables for example)

    or
People who need something straight away.

Ah yes. Monster. You know what the markup is on those? Stupid. My brother works at radio shack, and can buy them at cost. Got me a 16' higher grade for like, $30. Retailed $140. Greedy ****ing company, that Monster.

Was in pcworld a month back and there was a customer questioning 2 of the staff in about why the prices were so high, he was laying into them, really pissed off and not able to understand why things were so expensive compared to the uk pcworld. I'd say it went on for about 10 or 15 minutes. It was good to hear somebody pointing it out to them.

I have plenty of pcworld complaints. Bugs me when they don't have the correct prices on the shelves, bugs me that the internal hard disks are way more expensive than the externals, lots of times there is nobody at the checkout or only one person and lots of the staff just standing around. Never ask them to work out the price of something thats not priced, you'll be waiting around for quarter of an hour and the price will be much much higher than the UK store price. The stuff on the bargain/returned items shelves is sometimes more expensive than the stuff on the normal shelves.

I guess sometimes they have stuff at normal prices... makes you feel like you are getting a bargain... just don't check it against an online price

in no way am I defending these money grabbing bastards, but they have to make a living. HOWEVER, that kind of markup is a disgrace. I can see how upping the price of slow/low moving items is acceptable in a shop and even in an online shop. But that kind of markup is certainly not acceptable.

However, brick and mortar shops offer a face for people to deal with when they want to return an item, complain about something or have questions to ask. A certain amount of markup is acceptable, but to fleece the customer is not. I'll put it this way. Imagine all the computer shops shut down, all bits and pieces you need are no longer available, only over the internet. You've lost the cable for your camera. You really need a pic from it asap, you need it next morning. Tough, you have to wait for delivery or pay for express shipping from the online company.

As pointed out, it's necessity. If people were to stop shopping at places that didn't offer cut-throat prices they'd be gone in the morning. It's supply and demand. These places need to make their markup, but a lot seem to be fleecing the customer, I've seen it first hand, but I've also seen the companies who threat their customers well, and I've seen them disappear from the market. It seems to be one or the other.
