    Hey everyone,

Ok so Im going into my third year of business and law in UCD and just recently I have started to think about my future career options. Medicine is always something I have wanted to do but just didnt get the required points in the LC. Now it is something I am seriously considering doing. Because of the amount of work I would have to put into studying for the GAMSATS on top of what I'll already be doing to complete my degree I want to be entirely sure this is the right decision for me. Also the cost is something which I have to consider as I believe it is quiet expensive. What I was wondering is if there is anyone on these forums who has gone this route or who knows someone who is and who could provide me with some information regarding it. Im aware the Gamsats are quiet difficult so any info regarding them would be much appreciated also.

Thank you for taking the time to read this,
    Niamh.

    Hi Niamh,

If you do a search there's loads of threads here about GEM. There's also a stickie at the top of the forum that might also help. Lots of info there that might answer at least some of your questions.

    Hi,

Yes this is exactly what my cousin ended up doing. There is a lot of information on this on the net and as the moderator said in the sticky!

    Hi Niamh,

I have just finished my degree in sociology from ucd. I have also strongly been thinking about going for the gamsat. However, I am not totally sure if i would be able to take on the workload, especailly considering i only have a very mild science background. I always found chemistry quite mind baffling in school but i think if i really put my mind to it i could do it. I am just not really sure what to do:(
I am not sure how many people apply for this but i think i read somewhere that around 600 sit it and only 200 offered places out of this.. So there is a seriously high competitive rate..

oh what to do what to do

    Hey niamh,
I'm in a similar situation to you, i'm going into 3rd science in ucd so i'm not really having too many problems with the science. There is a lot of preperation to do but I'm sure you can do it if you work at it:) I'm in ucd studying for it during the summer-I'd be happy to speak with you if you'd like and show you what its like and the science stuff!its not that scary there's just a lot of hype around it:)

1 in 3 is not that competitive ... try becoming a cadet in army were its more likey 1 in 50.

in the mid eighties maybe, but in the last few years about 400 people apply for the cadets, and from what I hear if you have a degree already you have a huge chance at getting into the cadets, there are some driving test centres that only have a slightly higher pass rate than the gamsat

it is actually more of a 1 in 4.5 chance... and RCSI is the most competitive although many high scorers are apparently putting UL down first as it's supposed to be a great course

If you get over 60 in Gamsat and have a 2.1 degree you should get in to GEM.
A 60 in Gamsat is hard enough.
On the curve they sent out this year, its about 92%'ile

I know of people who got this (and better) with about 8 weeks study. And these were working full time jobs, about 4 years out of College.

Its hard as fup, but it can be done
