Not sure if this is the right place for it, please feel free to move it.

I want to propose to my girlfriend, have been thinking about it for awhile now.

Just looking for advice more than anything, can you get a ring on hire purchase ? what is standard you would spend on a ring etc ?

    Any advice is welcome

The old age saying is two months wages. But get what you can afford, keep it simply pretty. Think about her job (can she wear a ring at work?) Think about whether you want to enter into marriage already in debt (from the ring).

Thanks so far lads, I wouldn't get into debt for the ring.

Is it possible to get the ring and then pay back month by month ?

I presume you pick a ring pay it off and then you get the ring after you make the last payment ?

Sorry for all the questions lads and lassies.

I think youll find thats getting into debt - your basically talking about a hire purchase arangement. Much better save up and bragain hard for a price reduction.

I'd ignore that particular saying. It's not quite "old age" as it dates back to a marketing campaign by De Beers in the 1930s.

OP you'd be well advised to take the advice given by Damoz. Save up the money before making the purchase.

OP - do not buy a ring on hire purchase. Save up and buy what you can afford. If you are at proposal stage then your lady probably knows about your finances and whats affordable etc... Also you dont know what kind of ring she likes, she may not want something expensive, when I got engaged I was adamant that the ring was not expensive as I would have felt uncomfortable wearing something too expensive. Your lady may prefer a small discreet ring. I would advise you to save the money first then make the proposal, because as soon as you propose you are both going to want to tell people about it.

    Thanks lads,

So I will just save up and buy it then, makes more sense and no worry of going into debt

Exactly - save up and propose when you can afford to

If you want to save money on a ring, start saving and start doing your homework now. Learn everything you can about diamonds and settings. Read all the forums for advice. Learn what the prices are online. Start looking in irish jewellers now so you can 1 get an idea of what you like and 2 get an idea of how badly you will get ripped off on the irish high street compared to buying online or going abroad.

I did this and when it came time to buy, I knew exactly what i wanted, i emailed jewellers in antwerp (only the ones recomended by the ADJA, when you are buying abroad you don't want to deal with cowboys), i booked the cheapest flights i could and only went for one day. It is possible to do this if you know what you want and what you want is simple, if you want a complicated multistone ring you will need to spend more time there, which means spending more money on hotels etc which eats into any savings you might make. I dealt with marc at joaillerie du centre and was very happy.

Flights to brussels with aer lingus were 76euro (0euro flights, just paid the taxes) and 20euro on the bus from the airport to antwerp. If you are just going for one day don't fly with ryanair
