With Sky increasing its prices i am considering switching over to UPC.
I was considering going with their max package of Digital TV, Phone and Broadband.

Question is.....Am I mad for even thinking this?

No. What's your hang up about the idea?

Have been with NTL in past and not sure if service has improved.

customer service: not the mae west

technical performance: quite good (particularly so for broadband / phone. no HD tv, but the dvr is maybe 8- - 90% of what you'd experience from sky)

    value for money: absolutely excellent

Presuming that you can get the service installed, and it works, with no need to call their service call centre, you should be a happy customer...

Thanks for the info. Very much appreciated.

I'm weighing up quality of service versus cost at the moment and to be honest it seems like a no brainer to switch. I realise that UPC probably do not match Sky in terms of elements such as their EPG but as long as it is reasonably ok i think i may do the switch.

frankly i'm quite happy with it, and the fact that you can (for now) use the analogue feed to get basic 14 or 15 channels on secondary tvs around you house for free is quite an advantage. after that, I think it's an extra €8.50 per month to get an additional digital set top box

One thing that I found was when getting the initial service installed was to hound them for the week or two before they weere due to install to confirm the date / time of install.

The customer service has improved greatly in the past 6 months. I have had a few dealings with them over accounting and my experience with them where quick and had my issue resolved in a day.

Sky increase their prices in September.....UPC increase theirs December/January - this year the increase was approx 8%.

Its reasonable to expect a price increase from UPC - at a minimum they have to mirror the SKY premium package prices.

At the moment based on the TV package only SKY is cheaper than UPC and the picture quality etc is higher on Sky

just get a free sat box and you'll get a good mix of channels for free, with no sub. as you've a sky dish already, you'll only need to swop the sky box out.

for detials seee here: http://freesat.co.uk/ theres some suppliers in ireland

Love to use the Freesat option, but couldn't do without RTE / TG4

Or you could use the Sky box and load the UK default EPG

Interesting - how good is the picture with this option for RTÉ? Would it be good enough for a 1080p TV? I had always (probably wrongly) assumed that it wouldn't be

With a good signal, analogue is identical quality to Sky RTE, just not Widescreen, and higher quality than analogue or digital RTE on cable.

Not all HD tvs do upscaling to same quality, but any decent HD TV should upscale batter than an upscaling DVD player or Satellite Receiver (the RTE on Satellite is 720x 576i)
