Tax bill of 9.5k - single parent

Was out with my mate on Saturday and he was in awful state over a tax claim he received for 9,500. I can't see why he'd be liable but maybe the experts can clarify.

He has 2 kids with his ex girlfriend. He now lives with his new girl, they bought a house in 2004. He gets single parent's allowance as the children come and stay with him 3 - 4 days a week.

From what I can make out, he is being told he cannot claim mortgage interest relief on the Arklow property, and single parent allowance. It doesn't seem to me he's doing anything wrong, his circumstances are exactly as he has told the tax office.

    Can anyone help?

    Thanks in advance,

    Paul

If he previously bought a house with his ex-girlfriend before buying the other property with his current girlfriend then he has probably gone past the mortgage interest relief period and is no longer entitled to mortgage interest relief (TRS). If he bought his house in 2004 as a first-time buyer, then he is still entitled to TRS.

Since he is living with his current girlfriend, he cannot claim single parent allowance.

Is it just the TRS that is the problem? Was he claiming OP1 (one parent family credit) with the tax office? For him to get a clearer picture he is best asking Revenue for an explanation for the 9,500 tax bill.
