No don't use 3 in 1. Get some switch contact cleaner. You can find it in a hardware store or an electrical store. If you're in Dublin, check out Maplins, they sell it there.

I have used Electrolube EML contact cleaner and lubricant to good effect.
    Got it from Radionics:

Dont use wd40 either. It leaves a sticky residue and your pot will end up dirtier.

Any kind of oil is just going to wreck the pot. You need to spray contact cleaner into the pot itself and then turn it back and forth to clear away any oxidation or dirt. Contact cleaner is alcohol-based so it should evaporate, leaving very little residue.

You won't be able to get at the pot without opening the amp chassis, so be careful if you do - filter capacitors in an amp power supply hold charge even after the amp is switched off and plugged out. Don't touch anything on the inside other than the pot, and never put both hands into the amp.

Crackling can also be a sign that the pot is failing, in which case the cleaning may not help.

Do any guitar shops in Dublin sell pots ? I asked in XMusic there the other day and I was just sorta directed toward the repairs bench and there was only two on the wall , neither of which were any use to me.
