Question regarding getting teaching certification

    Hello everyone,

I am moving to Ireland from South Africa with my wife, and I am trying to figure out my future employment opportunities. I am 53 years old, with a degree (BS) in Accounting. I am thinking of pursuing training to become a secondary education teacher, and I wonder if my age will posit any problems. Also, I wonder if my degree will qualify me for pursuing a teaching certificate so that I can teach the subject. Any advice will be much appreciated, including where I should ask for more information.

You could have a look at www.pac.ie - the Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) is the course you need to check out. There's a wealth of information in that.

Regarding qualification - perhaps email info@teachingcouncil.ie. Website for this teaching body is www.teachingcouncil.ie

Presumably you would have to provide some kind of certification from your own country reagarding your qualification but perhaps they would advise you on that.

One thing - there is a quota on business teachers for the PGDE which means that only 10 per cent of candidates are business graduates which means that the points required (check out the literature on the first website I mentioned) are sky-high with people almost certainly having post-graduate qualifications too.

Age is not a factor at all.

    Hi Meelie,

Check out the thread below to get more info if u want.

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055613786

If your degree gets approved by the ITC I presume u will be qualified to teach accounting and business (business studies).

Like Rosita pointed out bbs degrees need more points because of the quota but like I got accepted for PGDE for NUI Galway with only 42 points for sept 2009 which was very lucky but yeah a masters gives u an extra 6 points which is massive.
