I got this email today about a part time job. All I have to do is watch football matches around ireland and record the statistics on a pda device. What do you guys think? I dont fully understand the match tickets part

"thank you for your interest in becoming a Runningball scout. In terms of your background and general enthusiasm I have no doubt that you would make an excellent scout. Please see below for further information on what the scouting entails. If you have any further questions not addressed sufficiently below, please do let me know and I will only be to happy to answer.

Here is a brief (but incomplete) outline of the basics of the scouting role -

    * Scouting is done via a handheld pda which uses specialist software to allow the inputing of the events on the field to be sent in real-time. The company provides the pda. Each new scout is given mandatory training before being allowed to scout a game. Once a scout is judged to be competent and accurate enough they will be allowed to scout games.

    * The training on the use of the pda should take around a total of 6 hours to cover everything. This of course, won't necessarily be done all in one session. Training is done remotely via VOIP, an IM client or by phone so there is no need to travel anywhere for the training, you can do it from home.

    * The position is self-employed/freelancer, you'll be responsible for any tax/ni declarations or contributions. Money is paid around the 6 of each month, e.g. for games scouted in May, payment around the 6th of June. Payment is made via Moneybookers. An online payment interface which is just like Paypal - you get the money on your online account and can then send it to your bank account, etc.

*Payment per game is on a sliding scale from 1 to 5 based on the scouts accuracy and speed, e.g. a rating of 1 would mean all important happenings where recorded in time and that you had recorded the correct numbers of goals, cards, corners etc. A rating of 1 currently equals 55 Euros, a rating of 2, 50 Euros and so on.

*For consistently good performance a scout can be rewarded. If they get a chain of 3, 6 or 10 games in a row with a rating of 1 they will get an additional payment on top of their basic scouting fee (it increases in relation to the legnth of the chain).

    * Aside from the scouting itself, all scouts have to follow certain standards. They should be at games in advance of kickoff - as a general rule of thumb the scout should be in the stadium 30 minutes before kickoff. Once they are in they send a 'test login' on their pda and send the weather and pitch conditions also.

*The scout has to pay for their own match tickets up front. But the total ticket value is refunded at the end of the month with the match fee(s) earned. In terms of mileage and expenditure. We don't cover travel costs for short distance trips but will pay all or a proportion of travel costs whether by car, train etc for trips out of the area.

Hopefully the above should answer some questions you may have. If you have any further questions or would like to know more about what the scouting exactly entails or anything else, please don't hesitate to ask. If your happy to proceed further, please get back to me and i'll explain where we go from there.

A buddy of mine was doing that job before, he's a massive LOI fan so he thought it was the business, I think he worked mostly at Cobh Ramblers and Cork City games.

    1. How will they know if you accurately recorded all of the stats?
    2. If they do in fact have a way of checking, then why would they need you to compile the stats for them?

Also, is it just me or does payment via moneybookers sound ridiculous?

I would assume that they probably compare the live in game stats provided by the likes of the OP with the post match stats probably from an official source. The whole point of the thing is to facilitate live spread betting on these games, thats why they need instant data. The payment method seems fairly practical to me. Much easier than a cheque or bank transfer anyway.

Sounds like a brilliant job, and with me being a huge Shels fan I'd be attending the matches anyway, OP if you don't mind me asking how did you apply or how did they get in contact with you?

Be aware that it's not a "standard" job, it's self-employment.

Grand if you are a student, or not on a benefit. And if you're on JA, even, you're allowed to be self-employed (I've only heard of this recently, don't know how it works).

Not grand if you're on JB, in which case you must not be earning any income from self-employment.

I did something similar years ago, I talked to some guy based in some English office for the duration of a LOI game. Simple stuff like 'Team X attacks, Team Y defends, Team X scores, Team Y yellow card, the referee is a ...'

Best.Job.Ever. Sometimes I'd go on a flourish and pretend to be George Hamilton on one of his worst days, try to humour the other guy on the other line (Invariably somebody with barely any English)

I really mean that. I went to LOI matches with my mates anyway and was usually half cut by the end of it all. Paid 70 euro for a game. Paid between 5 and 10 euro for my ticket. The remainder paid for my night out. Not bad for 90 minutes work.

While it may seem great its on a self employed so you are responsible for your own tax, USC, PRSI You are not employed by these people so be prepared to be file your tax returns by 31 Oct each year cause if you don't your screwed, or if your on social you may tell them about it. Not sure how it works if your self employed.

Haha yeah that was a goid few years ago. The job was great at the start - good pay and easy enough to input the stats - i got bored of it after a while thou as the standard of LOI is pretty aweful.

FYI the name of the company is Running Ball.
