lower leg pain from running

    hi, i have just started running this year to prepare for a triathlon and i'm really enjoying it. i havent really had a plan but i am going to start more structured training after my first event.

    my only real problem so far is with shin splints and achilles tendon pain. i had a 5k run on wednesday night and could hardly walk with the pain in my achilles and lower calfs when i got home. today(sunday) i was at the beach kitesurfing but i still had pains in my shins when running around getting ready. i would love to run 3 times a week but the pain just stops me. i've been kitesurfing for eight years or so and i'm wondering if the constant pushing against the board is shortening my lower leg muscles too much.

    any advice on how to treat this would be greatly appreciated.
