Moving from UPC to Sky

I'm thinking of moving all my TV bits and pieces to Sky from UPC. I have a UPC DVR box with Digital Max and Sky Sports, and upstairs a normal box with Digital Max. I've also got 3mb broadband.

Its costing me the bones of €100 a month, and friends of mine who have Sky seem to have much better value from their setup.

Can anyone tell me if UPC are negotiable on prices if you ring them up looking to change to Sky? I know that Sky are good in that regard to keep your custom.

I don't mind paying the €100 a month, but I just see a few friends getting much more for that amount.

Not sure how flexible they are but I made the reverse change and I can't imagine how there's better value to be had than putting all your eggs inthe UPC basket.

sky have a better TV deals but don't do broadband here so you'll have to get it from another company, it's widely known that UPC offer the best BB service by miles so you won't find better value there, having a BB service (only) from UPC will cost you an extra €5 PM suppliment on top of your BB charge,..BUT you would still have the pysical UPC cable to your home which is handy.;)

Aren't all the channels on the main TV mirrored on the upstairs normal box (Sky Sports)?

I can't imagine Sky being any cheaper,

You are currently paying UPC €77 for TV.

Sky would cost €75 for the same (or €67.50 with multiroom half price for 12 months).

But that is all excluding phone and bb, where you make the real savings with UPC. If you drop the TV from UPC, you will need to pay an extra €6 per month for BB. Don't forget to take that into account.

Also you will need to pay for Sky install €50 and maybe equipment.

Also you could potentially cancel the multiroom UPC and just use the 15 analogue TV channels for free, would save you €8.50.

When you look at your friends, your probably not taking into account all the extra that they are paying on phone and BB, which they have to get separately (probably at least another €50 per month).

I have 3G mobile broadband also which is €20 a month and I find that it works well enough. I use that a lot when I'm out of the house.

I'll have to do the sums again I think and make a call on it. Thanks for the help!

How can you compare the two?

Clearly Sky offeres so many more (and better) channels than what is availble on UPC. The packs can be adjusted to your own likes, i.e. why pay for kids TV if you never watch it, you can't with UPC but with Sky you can.

You get two extra Sky Movies channels over sat (SD 1 and SD 2) plus all the other movie channels included (non Sky channels).

Pricewise, yes, you will save money but isn't it like comparing apples with oranges?
