When Swans Attack!

A friend of mine was recently playing in Dun Laoighre when one of his shots landed close to a pair of swans with their four signets. He made his way up to his hot but as he neared the two adult swans became very wary and started going into attack mode. Swans can be dangerous enough and can break arms Ive been informed (At least my buddy reckons they can!) So anyways he just took a drop back and played in. It was an informal match but he was interested in the ruling and went into the rules committee who told him that there is no rule for such a situation and had it occurred in a compo he would have been penalised a shot... I know first hand there are rules for free drops if you land near alligators in Florida and I presume there are similiar rules for places with snakes and other such creatures but these are all probly local rules...

    Any thoughts>

I would think it would be a local rule. I'd want to know what the club are going to do now this has been brought to their attention. If there's a known nesting site then there should be signs stating that balls cannot be retrieved from the area and that a free drop should be taken.

Thinking about it.....what if you encounter any animal that is defending their young and that's stopping you playing your shot.

Im wondering is there an accepted rule to do with encountering any animal that may pose a personal risk to you in playing your golf shot

We had this discussion on here before... I know that in a 'dangerous' situation you are not obliged to play the ball and can drop (another ball obviously) not nearer the hole without penalty. It certainly applies to a swarm of bees and the like but I guess it could be argued subjectively that swans were looking at you menacingly... :)

I know I always take a mulligan if an animal looks at me funny, happens quite a bit too.:D

Something like this happened me in Castleknock recently. I tried to hit a 3-wood out of the rough on a par 5. There was a swan in front of me and I caught the shot thin and hit the swan on the arse. He got very agitated and the ball ended up about 5 yards from him so I just ran over and hit my next shot before he attacked me!
