op here - sorry it's not smoking - i was just giving an example. but addictions in general - it's usually sheer will-power to give them up???

WIll-power is obviously hugely important, but depending on the nature of the addiction (i.e. a chemical addiction) there may be a need for additional assistance. If you could post the nature of the addiction that might help.

Ultimately though, the biggest factor is that you really want to stop and are determined to make that happen.

All addictions have an underlying source. You need to find out what that is.

the way I use to remove an addiction is by creating another one ..... at the moment I have been noticing myself gambling online a fair bit - I wouldnt call it an addiction ....but then again an addict never does and always claims to be in control of it.....which I could claim that I am.

but if I'm being honest with myself I need to accept that I have an addiction and have been making steps to keep myself away from online gambling. (they make it so easy) .... its gotten to the point of gambling €500 a day (I even started selling stuff to clear debts so I could bet some more)

Long story short... I've taken steps to keep myself active and away from my addiction... the cause of my addiction is/was boredom....so now I try to keep myself occupied with various projects.

what I'm trying to say to the OP is that: well done on accepting that you have an addiction, now find out how/why you do whatever you are addicted to ? and try to identify a method of removing that.

if you can manage a week..... try putting whatever money you would normally spend on your addiction into a jar and at the end of a week see how much money you are wasting !!!

if your addiction is harmful (ie. drink/drugs - you already said it wasnt smoking)...then goto one of the main organisations to try to help beat it.....its tough to beat an addiction but the best way in my opinion is to regognise what causes your addiction and move the addiction to something less harmful.(or maybe a couple of different things)

If its any help - even though you mentioned its not smoking but texting. I recently gave up the fags by reading Allen Carrs - the only way to stop smoking. His method is not to berate you and explain the badness of smoking as we all already know this. Instead he explains the nature of addiction and how it effects you. As such the book (he states this himself) can be used to beat any addiction be it cigarettes, alchohol, gambling etc...

If your addiction is really getting you down give it a shot.

if you are selling things to clear debt, you have a problem and you are not in control. i've been there, things will only get worse, and quickly too.
