Just wondering do many of you watch non-english films subtitled or if you understand the language of the film.

Like Egyptian Cinema, Indian Cinema.... etc

I personally can only stand watching arabic films because I actually understand it, some absolutely great films, completely different style compared to american cinema and british films but not in a bad way. Some greatly made high budget films to be watched.

Well whats everyone else's favourite actor/film thats foreign?

For me it has to be Takeshi Kitano, and not just for his acting, but also his directing. Artwork too: his paintings appear in many of his films, especially Hana-Bi, where they form part of the plot.

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

    Legend.

He's also awesome as the school teacer in Battle Royale!

Oh, and his castle makes Japanese people go nuts:D

I've always like Andy Lau. Ken Watanabe also deserves mentioning though.

Foreign as in they primarily act in movies that aren't in english(As in they make most of their movies or all of their movies in something like chinese, japanese, arabic, whatever). Not foreign actors in english films.

Oh yeah I loved takeshi's castle, I don't know why it was just great.

Speaking of Japanese nutjobs, you should check out Takashi Miike. His films are insane.

Can't believe I haven't said who is my favourite actor yet... Anyways it would have to be probably

Adel Imam, probably the best comedy actor in all the middle east.

    Infernal Affairs / Andy Lau

I'd say about half the films I watch are subtitled. There's almost no end of thoroughly amazing films from all across the world, it barely feels like I've scratched the surface half the time. I wouldn't tie myself to prefering films from any one country in particular, there's so many great films from Japan and Korea, France, Germany, Spain and Sweden, or in Brazil.

A particularly good film I've seen recently was from Israel, Waltz with Bashir:

    Here's a couple more I'd recommend:

Which distribution company closed about two years ago? They were excellant for World Cinema.

Is Laser any good? I don't buy DVD's but I like to rent.

    That would be Tartan.

Freakin' huge loss tbh, there's a lot of films that would've got released on that label that are in limbo now, such as Yoji Yamada's Love and Honor. It's a real shame, I've got dozens of their DVDs.

    Ah thats the one!

I was working in a video shop which used to have a big selection of world cinema, a lot of it Tartan. I watched the majority of WC while there, I think they have mixed in WC with new releases so it costs more now:mad:

With any other distribution company step up to the plate?

I just did a quick head count of my dvds and I realised I have over 50 Tartan releases! (mostly Asian)

At the moment "arthouse" wise your best bet is probably Artificial Eye while Optimum Asia handles some of the more mainstream releases. Hong Kong Legends went a while back too (after flogging distinctly disappointing cut down versions of their releases with a magazine...)

To go back on topic, two of my current favourite actors are Tadanobu Asano and Tony Leung. In terms of films, I finally got around to watching Days of Being Wild a week or two ago and I liked it a lot.

    la haine

    irreversible

I think Gerard Depardieu (esp. in Cyrano de Bergerac) and Daniel Autueil are both very good actors. Also, Bruno Ganz for his role in Downfall.

Pan's Labyrinth is a really good film, mainly for it's look but also for the actor who plays Vidal (can't think of his name now).

Kagemusha and Rashomon are also two classics, imo.
