Bike damaged on plane

So, I bought one of these:
    http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/cycle/7/dhb_Elsted_Wheeled_Bike_Bag/5360032373/

And packed the bike into it - I removed the wheels and put them in the wheel pockets, reversed the pedals, lowered the seat and put the bike in upside down.

I've just reassembled it now, and the biggest chainring is so badly bent that its impossible to rotate the pedals without knocking the chain off. The middle chainring might be bent also (it's a triple), but it's hard to tell.

Did I pack it stupidly? The chainring was exposed a the top I suppose, but I thought it would have been sturdy enough, unless hit very hard. Should I have removed the cranks? Should I have bit the bullet and bought a hard case?

Has this happened to anyone before? Did Aerlingus pay up? I ticked the travel insurance box when I booked, so hopefully this will help. Where's a good place near Castleknock to get it fixed? (stag cycles in Lucan?)
