Looking to buy a new set of irons as feel it's time to move on from my beginners rams. Have a budget of about 400 and have been looking at the cobra fp2, mizuno mx100, callaway x20's. Have bene offered a set of ping beryllium copper irons for 400 as well. Can't decide what to go for really.

Any help would be appreciated. Cheers.

    go mizuno
    x-20's crap imo
    don't know bout cobra's

mizunos are nice, but any of those will do fine. the x20s certainly aren't 'crap', you'd be hard pushed to find any irons from a major brand that aren't decent. Between them it's all about what suits your eye and your game.

    Highly recommend Cobra S9s.
Went on reviews and not disappointed - fly off face, good high flight, very forgiving

I'd go for the coppers, just make sure they are the correct ones for you, as there are different type (red, black and blue dot I think)

correction: x-20's are crap compared to previous models of callaway like x-18 x-14 and even x-16

Cheers guys. Still can't decide though. leaning towards the cobras or the mizuno, ye've put me off the callaway. Would love to get the Cobra S9 but too expensive, can get the cobra fp 2 for 300 at the moment and the mizuno mx100 for about 350 which are in budget.

    Any other recommendations???

Just came across the mizuno mx-950 for 333 euro, reviews look really good but would be good to hear from someone who has them or has tried them out.

    hey Trankton,

i cant highly recommend the Cobra S9 the are an amazing club, I have only recently bought them and have shaved 2 strokes of my round in a month. I was playing off 21 with a set of Wilsons. I got them for 399, McGuirks are charging 499 to 599. if you intersted in a set at 399 let me know and i will give you the name of the place i got them. Fully legit pro shop.

Would definately be interested in the S9's at that price.

Had a go with these today alright and they were definately the correct ones but not sure about spending 400 euro on a second hand set of clubs...probably just me though.

Been reading about the Wilson Di7's.
Seem a good set for a beginner.
    Any thoughts?

been through so many golf clubs in the last couple of weeks my elbows and shoulders are sore. However, I've deicded to go for the Di7's alright, they feel great and can get massive distance out of them. The deep red were a bit too chunky and only have hybrids for the 3 and 4 whereas you get the 4 iron with the di7. Also, cobras were too expensive and found that with the mizuno I was losing a lot of distance. So Di7 it is. Happy days.

Di7's are a beautiful club mate. Got myself a set and hitting some wonderful shots with them.

    Excellent news, thanks guys ;)
I think I'm gonna get a set of Wilson Di7's, I keep reading excellent reviews.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 222 ✭✭Trankton

Do picked up the Di7's for 250 euro, bargain. Played first round with them yesterday and picked up my first birdie of the year along with 4 pars. Couldn't be happier. The only thing is with the 50 odd yard pitches, because of the extra distance of the clubs I was over-hitting the greens, won't take long to get my range on these though.

Thanks for all the advice guys. Will keep ye updated on progress over the next few weeks.

Where'd you pick up that bargain Trankton?
Was planning on popping round McGuirks tonight.

Well Retief you're going to the right place :) Got mine in McGuirks at leopardstown, they're really good there. Best of luck mate.

Early days for me to make recommendations but I'll share what I have.
I've only played one game and been to the range 3 times since I got the Di9's (very similar to the 7's apparently), and I really like them sofar. The grips are really awesome and the clubhead just 'sits' nicely on the ground, which gives you a nice stable base to grip from which helps a lot if you're as noobalicious as I am ;)
    So far so good ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 210 ✭✭damo80

    thanks for that Retief :)

was offered a set (3-sw) of Callaway x18s for €200 second hand. so might get them. look decent enough

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 222 ✭✭Trankton

Have played 3 round with the Di7's now and really love them, took a bit to get used to the extra distance but now smashing them down the course, would highly recommend, very forgiving too.

The deep reds are in McGuirks for 200 at the moment 3 and 4 hybrid and 5 to sw, brilliant offer, I just preferred the feel of the di7.

Good luck with whatever you get.

    .

ah nuts!!! could have done without knowing that now :) would anyone know which would be the better club, the deep red new or x18s second hand? sorry for the stoopid questions its just that im at a loss at the mo and havent a clue about the different types

If the x18s are in good condition then they are a better deal at €200 imo.

Sorry to hijack the thread here guys but don't feel the need for an extra thread on similar topic. My dad is 60 shortly and only playing golf a year so high handicap. I am looking at getting him a new set - was interested in the Di7's mentioned earlier but when I got to McGuirks in leopardstown last weekend they had none left :-( Anyway, looking at a similar set with graphite shafts, have been looking at Mx 100's, Di 9's and taylormade i 7's - any comments/suggestions?

    Thanks for your help

when buying for someone else it's almost impossible to make a recommendation. i bought the Di9's recently after 2 years of a starter set, i play off 23, also a high handicapp like your Dad, and i really like them so far ( but does anyone who bought recently say otherwise?:o), but there are subtle differences between clubs. i think you should go with what you think will suit your Dad, it's all about enjoying the round rather than always trying to shoot low scores!!!! if he can hit the ball with a starter set then he'll certainly be able to hit it with any of the clubs you mentioned.

    who ru
Many thanks for the advice, spot on. In fairness, he is only out to enjoy the game so i'll just take all the reviews from here and make a more informed decision than i would have, boards.ie, the virtual decision maker!
