I haven't heard back from the insurance company yet but with the car most likely in need of a new bonnet, front panel, grill, front bumper and headlights I'm pretty certain it's going to be a write off.

To make things worse the driver at fault is trying to claim against my insurance so it could be a while before insurance gets sorted so I'm trying to suss out my options...

Even if the claim goes my way, I can't see myself getting more than a grand for the car total (which would obviously include a 'scrap' value). If the insurance companies decide to evaluate the accident as a 50/50 (the responding Garda's opinion though I disagree) I'm guessing that it's not even worth my while claiming against my own insurance given what it'll do to my no claims...

What sort of value would I be looking at for scrapping this myself? TBH, if it's less than 3 or 400 I'm tempted to see if I can get the parts I need in a breakers yard and have it as a project car to fix up myself as a run-around for the girlfriend.

Worth trying to fix it up myself or can anyone recommend a scrap dealer who'd give me a few quid for it?

A friend was involved in a similar accident with the same year Civic. I think, including paint (and painting it himself) it cost him less than 200 euro excluding the headlamps. Albeit the parts were spurious and didn't fit 100% perfectly, it did the job and the car is back on the road. What colour is it?

Also to scrap the car you may have to pay €100+++ depending. Ring around your local scrappies.

Parts for it should be dirt cheap. You should fix it up and sell it on again. Cars like that are flavour of the month right now, so should be sold easily.

Thanks but no thanks. While the insurance company aren't offering me anything for it in scrappage either there are 4 good tyres, a 9 month old battery and two month old brake discs and pads on her which would be worth at least a few quid...

Since the insurance company aren't offering me anything in scrappage for it I think it's going to become a project to fix up for the better half to use as a run-around.

According to this, an authorised scrapyard has to take it for free & issue certificate of destruction.

Just realised you can be charged if some parts of the vehicle are missing.

Would be interesting to know what the legal definition of 'intact' is (i.e. how much can you salvage out of it before they're not obliged to take it for free).

    This taken from that page
If essential parts of the vehicle (for example, engine, gearbox, transmission and catalytic converter) are missing, or the vehicle contains waste, then you can be charged. A good rule of thumb is, if you want the car accepted for free, don’t harvest spare parts of value first.

Wonder would the scrapyard let you get the parts from it after you get your cert of destruction and before they put it in the crusher?

Aye - wondering what the legal definition is rather than the 'rule of thumb' ;)

    Looking for the margin!
