Was looking at the new Phillips 9 series which come in around €1700 in Harveys and the like, they had old-style Samsungs at €1049 (series 6 I think) but it was 100hz.

I have a Sony 32V200 which I bought three years ago and it's been great, what are the new Sonys like?

    Any opinions?

Depends what you will be using it for. The new Sony W5500 series has serious input lag and sucks for gaming, but they have arguably the best motion picture compensation around (100hz) with little or no artifacts, have mpeg4 support, usb, net etc.. Everything you want. On the other hand previous Sony's (W4500 and 4000) are superior for gaming but are lacking some of the newer features. Also the W4500 is known for clouding issues and the 4000 series lacks 100hz. It's also my opinion the Sony's are edged out slightly for black levels by the latest Samsungs and Panasonics.

So to answer your question, have a look at Sony,Panasonic and Samsung sets in the stores, and get whichever one you think has the best picture, matches your budget and has the features you want. However if you want a TV for gaming then the Sony W4000 is arguably the best, doesn't have clouding issues like the 4500 series or input lag issues like the 5500 series but is missing 100hz. (Also, take a look at reviews on hdtvtest.co.uk.).

As for 100hz, it's really only useful for sports as the motion compensation does nothing for movies..makes them look like documentaries. And I'd forget about 200hz. Not needed and only available on the the uber expensive Sony Z4500 series. Still if 100hz is important to you and you watch sports, than Sony are supposed to have the best implementation of it according to reviews. Can't comment on the V series as I've only had the W series myself.

Plasma is also an option. Hearing good things about the new NeoPDP Panasonic plasmas. Better blacks than any LCD, but heavier, consume more power, are prone to image retention if not burned in properly for 200 hours, and there is the problem of phosphor trails which some people notice. For that reason I have avoided plasmas. On the other hand they are much less prone to dead pixels, and do offer better black levels than LCD's as I've said.
