i had a nokia before which was classified as a builders phone, as the saying goes you could beat someone half to death with it and still call the ambulance.
however it packed in eventually and the two i have had since are constantly giving grief, they don't seem to be able for the dirt and dust associated with manual work, any advice on a type to get?

The best rugged phone at the moment is the sonim XP3:

The older version is the XP1:

All the sonim models will survive hopping it off a wall or immersion in water.

The alternative is to get a REALLY cheap phone and make copies of your SIM.
A good cheap mobile is the Motorola F3:

All the prices on those are for fully unlocked phones as none are offered on any irish network.

JCB also have a rugged phone, but it's exactly the same as the Sonim XP1:

you could try a "jack and Jill" upgrade for your old nokia, look in the bin for a fresh cover and battery.

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

The best thing about my old nokia is that the battery is a bit dodgy. The phone goes dead every second time the mrs rings me, drives her mad, when I get a new phone I'm putting this one on ebay.

Nope... the JCB is just a yellow version of the sonim XP1.
    The XP1 is ~€200 unlocked.
