Any software I can run on machine to get his documents off? There are not in any one location.

    Thanks

The easiest way to get stuff of it would be to plug it's hard drive into another pc as a slave drive

Ubuntu Live cd, will boot machine and allow you to get data off if the OS is corrupted.

Yup, its easy peasy, just burn the ISO as a disk image and ensure the boot order is cd drive first and away you go, NTFS is now supported inside Ubuntu, either use a memory stick or hard drive alternatively use a network connection.

If you're uncomfortable using a Linux live cd you could always see if someone you knows has an external hard drive enclosure. Then all you have to do is take the drive out, plug it into the enclosure and plug the enclosure into another PC with the USB cable.

Places like Marx Computers have usb hard drive adaptors for around 20 euro.

Correct, just hadn't thought you needed that bit of info! :)

Live CD means you don't have to risk handling the hardware etc, if it doesn't work then you can always proceed to physically moving the drive.
