I want to get myself a 4 string bass for the studio. I'm looking for a bass that has a large range of sounds and obviously sounds very nice. Mostly pop and pop/rock I'm doing. I use my mates fender jaguar which is very nice. That is active. Any suggestions on one to go for?

Depends on your budget I suppose. Can't really go wrong with a Fender Jazz.

For cheaper guitars the Epiphone Thunderbird is a lot of bass for the money IMO. My 1st choice for a cheap bass (around €500)would be a G+L L2000 "tribute". I have something similar myself and find it very playable having a good range of tones. It's a bit like a Jazz bass with a Music Man Bridge.

Two very good bass's there, Play a T-Bird myself - they're are great for the money, bought mine for £200, have a distinct growl though so not as versatile
as some others, Yamaha have some nice active basses at the minute which are pretty inexpensive.

I also use a sansamp Bass DI which are well worth checking out for getting great bass tones - http://www.tech21nyc.com/products/sansamp/bassdriverdi.html

A Jazz bass with an active preamp would do a good job. Personally I like the Audere JZ3 preamp. It drops straight in with no soldering required. :)

I think Cort basses could be worth looking at too.

If its versatility you are after I would definitely second studiorat amd recommend going with a G&L L2000.

I had one of these a couple of years back and traded it for a Rickenbacker 4003. (I just had to get one).

Very comfortable and would suit many styles.

I've played a couple of G+Ls . They're proper basses ok, and not too expensive as I recall.

Think the Tribute range start around the 450 mark they go up then to about 2500 if I remember rightly! nice basses tho.

Also the Ernie Ball Music Man Sub is very good for the money, very near the real thing for half the money!

    The G+L I played was around 700 I think.

The Sub is very average I think with no real personality and a flabby bottom . We were recording one a few weeks ago !

I have to say that most clients prefer to see makes they know when they hire a studio, not sure if this is the reason your buying so as mentioned a Fender Jazz or a Precision Bass would be a good choice.

But, I'd really have to way in and back the G&L tribute bass, I've played a good few of them and there a really nice bass.

A Fender Precision or Jazz bass will cover an awful lot of ground and can be made work for almost any style of music. Instruments with active pickups might excel in certain genres but can be quite unsuited to others.

It got great reviews everywhere I have looked. It seems to have a huge variety of sounds. I found a right deal too - €444 brand new ! I'll believe it when I see it.

    Cheers for all the advice

Well after one years use I'm very happy with it. I can achieve a large number of tones. It plays nice and I picked one up for €500 from a German distributor.
    Thanks for all the advise.

    I have had:
    Stingray, Warwick, jazz bass.
I now have an American Standard P Bass and it records FAR better than the previous basses.
I also have a Warwick with the bottom 4 of a 5 string set on it for the down tuned metallers.
Active basses with eq tend to really lack in the mid range and a jazz bass has a certain phase between the 2 pickups that I don't like.
P Bass into Phoenix Audio pre into Drawmer 1968 compressor. Job done!

Yep our bass player picked up an L2000 Tribute Series and has never looked back, serious bass for the money.
