Greatest Football Point Ever Scored

What was the best point ever scored in a football match?

i'll go for Seanie Johnson. The way he turned one of the best backs in the country inside out on a wet night, then sold him a dummy...and the move itself had a great flow to it with plenty of footpassing in terrible conditions:

Quite liked Graham Geraghty's point against Dublin in 2005 from the end line of the Davin Stand.

It starts at 1 min 46 seconds on this link.

    Enjoy.

+1 on the Maurice Fitz point, will stand the test of time - similar to Carey's point that most have agreed is the greatest hurling point scored - what really sets it apart is the context and the importance and the fact that like someone mentioned on the Caarey point ,you dont need a you tube link anyone who foolows the game can remember it like it was yesterday its engrained into the memory.

Oh yeah and obviously every delicious and spectaular point that Declan Browne scored are better but no-one outside of Tipp or the opposition on the given day ever got to see them

There you go, just copy and paste what comes after the = between the youtube tags.

I'd go for this point too, that Cavan point is good enough but since it was the opening point in a league game, imo it can't really compare with a last minute kick when you're down a point with the oppositions manager screaming in your ear!

lol, michael donnelan didnt even score that one, it was sean og. the fact that a run can be voted the number number one Gaa moment of all time is laughable. how it even made the top 20 ill never know.

Maurice Fitzs point, is surely the greatest score of all time, though theres bound to have been scores never seen that didnt make it to the public eye.

though i have to say, as a collection, those points that Gerragty got are the best you will ever see, and i dont like the man one bit. he was on fire that day, all his scores were sheer sublime. could watch that game over and over again.

Maurice Fitz's point against Dublin by a mile. The genius of the man to do that when it mattered most in injury time. Be a long time before we see his like again.

I agree. I am a Galway and cant understand the fuss. It was a nice move but Donnellan should never have been let run like that. Also a fast run its not a particular skill.

A better point was scored in that game by Ja Fallon from the side line.

Interestingly, this is a highlights package of the '98 All Ireland Final and 'that' point is not included.

Some great scores in that game. I preferred how football was played back then.

Galway were the exception even then, football had been in decline since 1986 after the great Kerry team of that time came to an end. It took Kildare managed by Mick o Dwyer and a Galway team playing the the way they've always played but this time with 15 men that had been prepared properly to bring football back as a spectacle again. The late Sean Purcell is supposed to have said after a good Galway attack followed by a point. "Now thats football"

yep, as Michael O Muircheartaigh put it during the commentry " a mighty mighty kick" by Ja Fallon in 98. some score.

Much as it pains me to say it, I agree with this.

Most people will go for points that meant a lot to them because they were scored by their county but when people still mention it in the county that the point was scored against almost a decade later*, that's the sign of a whopper point.

*As happened in Hill 16 last weekend. Dublin got a sideline ball and someone behind me said "Jesus, he'd need to be Maurice Fitz himself to stick that over" The conversation would have gone on longer but Gary Connaughton mysteriously forgot he was allowed to catch a ball and Bernard Brogan scored a goal, interrupting our reminiscing about that point

Galway played great football back then no doubt but Kildare certainly didn't. If the Cruyff's Holland invented 'total football, then Micko's Kildare gave us 'total hand-passing'. It was truly awful to watch. They had some great players back then, the likes of Martin Lynch and that big fella they borrowed from Cork, Brian Murphy. But instead of kicking direct fast ball into them, they passed it hand to hand the entire length of the field, it won them a couple of Leinster titles but they never clocked up high scores doing it and crucially didn't claim an All Ireland.

Picking out one point is impossible.

I could name about thirty and Maurice Fitzgerald scored greater points than that free kick. I does look good though because it was caught at the right angle by the camera.

TV angles have nothing to do with it. You should have seen the angle when sitting in the stand. He must have started it off 10 yards left of the outside left post and it finshed off over the black mark on the crossbar. Unreal.

Anyone remember Derek Duggans free kick from the ground against Mayo in the drawn Connaught Final in '91?

I believe this to be one of the greatest ever because
    • Distance, He was about 52m out.
    • Pressure, it was deep into injury time and they were a point behind.
    • Youth, it was his first championship season, he was still 19 i think.
    • Conditions, The pitch was soaked, his boots must have been full of water.
    • Wind, he was against the wind, the ball hung in the air for what seemed like an eternity and still went over the bar around the level of the top of the posts.
    • Importance, Roscommon went on to win a Connacht title.
Another factor is the reaction of the crowd behind the posts when seen on T.V. Always adds to it!

Also have to agree with this, Its just one of these scores where the ball is struck perfectly.

Liam Hayes referred to when this happens in his book.
Like when you hit a golf ball or snooker ball perfectly, it just makes this distinctive noise "click".
When this happens the ball travels faster, harder and further than youd expect but still maintains its accuracy.

Wow you must have had an amazing spot in the stand being able to see how far ouside he put it and then being able to see it going over the black mark on the crossbar. :)

Look I'm not disputing the fact that it was a great score, I am just saying that there are many, many exceptional points that deserve consideration. I mean Matt Connor scored some awesome points, Derek Duggan's free kick which was the last kick of the game looked like a no hoper but he got it. How many times has Peter Canavan scored incredible points from play.

And as I said already Maurice Fitzgerald has scored better points, possibly even better free kicks.

As a matter of fact I'd argue that a free kick should not even be considered for the best point ever. I mean fair enough they can be difficult but certainly not as difficult as trying to score from distance or from an acute angle while on the run with defenders all over you.

It's funny how it's perceived it was played differently then. The Tribune did a piece on that match and there was very few long kick passes in it, far more handpassing and not just by Kildare!

    Must rewatch it myself soon.

That was some point. Eamonn McEnaeny's 45 to equalise against Kerry in 85 was a massive point too.

Interesting. Can you remember when that piece was written? Would love to watch the game straight through myself too.

Might have been last Summer. One of their stat sections which is one of the reasons I read it for GAA Coverage. They pointed out long ball stuff barring Donnellans oft remembered point, wasn't as common as people think.

Probably best to watch it for your own eyes. :D

Watched Donegal in 92 just last week and we probably used as much kick passing as Galway in 98! Very little high catching then too, more breaking ball.

Donegal played the puke football in the last 15/20 minutes but probably more due to necessity/fear than tactics. The wee man was more in the full back line than half forward line in the second half. The original Dooher, though more skillful!

Damien O'Reilly - Cavan V Donegal 1992- last minute.. volley from the end line to level the game. Cant find footage but if anyone can would love to see it ( i was hanging on to a billboard in Breffni park at the time).

Donegal hammered Cavan in the replay, and went on to win the all ireland that year.

With him been on his wrong side, out side of the left foot, towards the end of the game and into the hill. Legend point.

Maurice Fitz top notch though too.
