I have an arts degree & higher diploma in accounting & finance. Im finding it hard to find a trainee accountant position atm. I was wondering would it improve my employment prospects if I registered with one of the accountancy bodies first instead of waiting to register when hired by someone.

It would definitly help but wouldnt be a deal breaker.

Good luck with the job hunt.

It may and may not help. If you register for example with ICAI and you cannot find a company that supports that training contract you are at a loss. It may restrict your choices if you register with an institute and cannot find training with a recoginsed training firm.

With your qualifications you would be considered "part qualified" and if you registered say with ACCA and got your exemptions, you would be more employable if you had only a limited number of exams to go (less study leave etc...).

It is most definitely advisable to register with an accountancy body. For the record, I'm a CIMA head. Aw registering it shows that you are serious about your aims to qualify as an accountant. Once you apply for your exemptions you are a part qualified accountant! It certainly can't do you any harm. Also advisable to start working on the professional exams as soon as you can. No point waiting around!
