I've a contract with a big 4 firm, starting in autumn 2010 on 23,500, doing a masters before i take it up. what can i expect to be earning over the course of my 3 years? i presume it'll go up each year? i'm going to be in Tax.

It depends on how the economy is performing when you start. At the moment, a lot of firms (including Big 4) are taking pay cuts rather than getting pay increases! In previous year though, yes, you're salary would have risen each year.

For those of us starting in September, is there actually a chance our salaries wouldn't increase over the 3 years? It wouldn't change my mind about accepting the contract ... but it would really suck!

23.5 starting, that must be near the top of what trainees are getting this year.

I dont think they are going to put it up much each year. If they do it will prob go to about 27 in year 2 and 30 in year 3 if you havnt passed your exmas based on this years numbers. That amount will prob go a lot further than it used to and of course its great to have a job the way things are!

2-3 years ago... prolly 45k by the time you were done, if not more.

    Now.... prolly bout 23.5k!!!

Seriously, I started in non-big 4 on 24.5k last November, and we were told about 3 weeks ago we were on a pay freeze for the next 12 months at least. So I'll effectively have 1.5, almost 2 years under my belt and still be earning what I did at the start :(

Try 2.5 years and actually being worse off because of the income levy.. Nothing for it but laughing. Especially when folks come on here saying the influx is only in it for the big bucks makes me :pac: everytime. I'm reaping the rewards to be sure, all 21k of it.

well its next year but i was meant to start on 26k. it was 24 in audit, 25 in tax and an extra k if you do the masters, every1 was told it was being cut by 2.5 though, so those goin straight in from degree will be on 21.5.

doesn't look like i'll be earning much in the short term, still great to have the job though - getting a loan to help me through the end of the masters and for a bit of travel next year mightn't be the best idea though.
