Lean muscle mass is the weight you want to be gaining. The alternative is fat which I assume is not the "healthy weight" you refer to??

Skinny and muscular?! Look fat and muscle are two entirely different compositions and you can't "turn" fat (which is what I assume you mean by weight) into muscle. Someone else here will be more qualified to advise you on a suitable routine but if you want to bulk up for the season start by looking at your diet. Eat the right high protein foods (turkey, tuna, red meat, salmon, chicken etc- see the stickies) eating slightly more calories than you need to maintain your current weight, get to the gym and start lifting heavy.

I'm afraid what you're saying makes no sense. You don't turn "weight" into muscle. Muscle is weight. Fat is also weight, but they are not convertable.

To put on solid, lean weight is a matter of lifting weights and eating like ten pregnant women with intestinal worms.

Please read the stickies, have a bit of a think and come back.

I wouldn't worry about the actual weight you're lifting.

I'll leave the diet side for a moment here (to be honest, it's more important and also well covered in the stickies in general terms) but I'll give you some hints in terms of training.

For someone starting out, it's important to learn the basic compound exercises (such as squat, deadlift and bench press) correctly and perform them with good form. Base a workout around one of these exercises and you can add additional exercises around them; chin/pull-ups, bent over rows, standing presses, lunges etc.

I would recommend aiming for a weight you can just about do 8-10 reps with, 3 times, with a 1-2 minutes rest between sets.

That's just a vague outline, I'm sure someone else will be able to help with a more detailed plan.

In terms of how much you should be lifting, it really is irrelevant once you are lifting with good technique, for the correct amount of reps, with the last one or two a challenge. I started out around 70kg or so myself (I'm 6'1 so was quite skinny) and bench pressing 40kg for 6 was very tough. Now I'm leaner, up around 80kg and recently managed 120kg for a 1 rep max. It's just a matter of consistency and doing it right.

i done weight training before and the most ive ever benched was 10 reps of 55kg.How do i know when i should be moving up a weight for lifting..i was advised before move up a weight when you can do it at your ease.

Nothing should be at your ease, as such. When you're getting that last rep without too much of a challenge, its time to lift more weight.

If you can do 10 reps of 55kg and the last rep is getting easy, then up the weight to 60kg and start at 8, working up to 10 reps again then upping the weight etc.

Sounds like Starting Strength, combined with a good wallop of foodage and milk, would be a good one for you

That would be perfect in theory but trying to combine 3 SS workouts a week with 2 team training sessions and a match at the weekend (sometimes midweek matches aswell) means that you don't have much time to recover.

Ok. Just to recap, you are looking to put on weight, but not muscle.

Have you heard of mars bars?

Why would one want to get fat though? I thought lean but muscular was the way to go. Am i doing this wrong?
