Boost TV signal

    Hi,

We have upgraded to NTL Digital but unfortunately the signal strength is poor coming into the apartment - We get a blue screen most of the time adn so just use the basic NTL into the back of the TV. NTL say they are in the process of upgrading the cabling in the area but no timeframe has been given

So, I was wondering if there is any way that we can boost the signal using a booster or will this work well enought to help ?

    Any recommendations would be great

    Cheers

For a start, get in touch with UPC and let them know that you do not want to be billed for a servive you are not receiving.
The analogue costs €24.50 per month. I don't know what package you are on but if you are on Digital Max, then you are currently being overcharged.

I was just helping a friend try to improve his analogue signal with a booster. It made no difference. If UPC said that they are working to improve the signal in the area, then you probably just have to wait. I don't understand why they signed you up in the first place if they could not deliver.

Adding a booster to distorted or very week signal will not only boost the "clean" signal but also any interference, nor will it necessary give you the wanted result of an actual signal.

A few things I'd check first:

    1. Do you have more than one TV set receiving the signal from the same TV point?

    2. How far away is the TV from the actual TV point on the wall?

    3. Is the cable running from the wall to the TV set ok, meaning that the cable is in one piece (the threads surrounding the core should not touch the middle thread).

something here seems a little odd - you can't use the digital stb,. yet you can watch the analogue? Typically, the digital box will work better than analogue... I think it sounds like a prob with your STB.

Also, you don't want to use a signal booster, as you may in future wush to avail of broadband / phone, and a signal booster will preculude you from this...

Did the UPC technician install / test the installation?

An ordinary TV aerial booster will typically overload and corrupt Digital Cable while just causing "herring bone" patterning on Analogue.

Proper cable TV amplifiers are rated for 55, 77 or 88 etc simultaneous channels at high level for distribution splitting. TV amplifiers are rated for low level signals with less than 10 channels typically.

You need to amplify a signal before it goes in local cable. The Apartment should have central amplifiers/splitters. This is why a TV amp is most effective on the mast about 1m away from the aerial, or at a central distribution point, not at the back of the TV set.

There could even be too much signal.

Don't waste money on a TV amplifier / pre-amp. Contact UPC and the Aparment Management to sort the problem.
