Thailand on a budget?

Hi, hoping to go to Thailand for about 6 weeks and am wondering what is the minimum amount of money you would generally need for a backpacking holiday? I hope to just go to the islands and do a good bit of sight seeing. I have been told different amounts by various people and I guess it depends on your lifestyle. Anyway, I don't intend on buying anything only food/drink and a few drinks at night. Any ideas/suggestions?
    Thanks

Ok I've worked out my funds and I will have about €25 per day to spend. Is this enough? I will most likely be drinking a good bit as I am going with friends but I'm not too fussy about eating in restaurants and would be happy to eat from street vendors a good bit as well as visit some restaurants now and again.

went to thailand last year and spent 1000 euro a month, was there for 3
and that was just enough really its tuff enough at times to budget over there

esp when ur in bangkok, khaosan road ect... but just pick the cheapest place possible to stay while your there dont buy stupid crap off the streets t-shirts, lighters, stupid hats, expensive go go girls ect...
as you prob wont use em when your home, buy a bottle of whisky in seven eleven shops over there get pissed before you go out and its happy days,

i should mention that i did rent mopeds when i was there a lot so this might have added to my cost but not by much cause they are cheap out over there and some laugh
so lets say your really good at budgeting you might be able to do a 6 week trip for 1200 euro but i feel that would be tough work so i think around the 1500 mark would be good for 6 weeks and when you see every other tourist having fun on mopeds you will want one too... and whatever happens go to Ko Phi Phi & and get outta bangkok as fast as possible is the worst place in the country

hope this was helpful to you mate im heading back in oct my self for 2 months cant wait...

Yeah mate thanks this is very helpful. Getting out of bangkok as fast as possible seems to be the advice that most people give. As for mopeds they are certainly a must so I will have to fit these in to my budget. I will be staying away from buying anything on the streets as there is really nothing I need to get, and keeping all funds for living expenses.
