Drivers licence will do, but you can not use a drivers licence with online check in.

A Passport IS required for Ryanair.

London Heathrow Terminal 1 for example do not perform passport checks on arrival as this is a Domestic/Ireland terminal.

You simply disembark, grab your bag(if applicable) and leave the airport.

It was not required the last time I flew with them (2 or 3 months ago, Kerry to Standstead). It's hidden a bit on their site, the reason being the can not actually charge you for physical check in with a drivers licence as they can not offer a free online alternitive (Their online system can not take drivers licences)

I just read up on it there, Ryanair are phasing out physical checkin completely, if the flight was booked before may and physical checkin was selected you CAN use your drivers licence. (This capability will be removed completely by October)
