Hi everyone. i ordered my iPhone on friday online and i got it delivered today.
So pleased with it so far, its fab :D:D :pac:

questions are coming into mind, but most of them i find u can answer urself by just messing with the phone, its so clever.

but email, you know when you hit the email button at the bottom of home page? is there any way you can get the phone to not automatically go checking the email for new mail? I just want to look at the inbox etc.

    thanks

***Update** Ah i found it myself in the 'Fetch new data' settings!! Change it to 'manual' - i was only looking at the 'push' settings before.

Proof that iphone is so intuitive!! as if i needed proof. :P

oh no, it still seems to say 'connecting' when i hit the email button on home - back to square one. any advice anyone? :o

It has to connect to your mailbox to see what's in it - it doesn't store your mail offline. (Well there may be some caching going on). Turning off fetching just stops it going out automatically to check for mail in the background periodically.

ah right, i thought it was storing offline. Thanks for that Stephen!

so basically every time i hit that mail button i will be charged for going online? (except of course if i am connecting to my own wifi network @home) I'm trying to get this all clear in my head so i wont have any surprise charges hehe

Yeah, except when you're on wifi. If you have any kind of data plan in your tarriff though it should have no impact. Very, very little data is transferred. Its only if you're on pay as you go or a bill with no data allowance where you'd get stung by this.

Slightly related - I have mail feeding onto iphone from hotmail - is there anything I can do to ensure that when I delete mail on hotmail (on my desktop) that the mail will delete on the iphone?

Also is there anyway of getting folders for my mail on the iphone beyond just inbox and thrash?

    Cheers

Since Hotmail doesn't support IMAP, you can't get either of those two things. If you use Gmail or Yahoo, you can use IMAP which syncs email between phone and computer and allows you to set up folders.

This would be great to have set up....um, when i activated my phone this morning i just synched everything (email settings etc) over from my Macbook. How do i know if IMAP is set up?

sorry if this is a daft question, i am fairly ok with most set up things but IMAP has me a bit lost :o

V pleased with myself now though cos i got my home wifi router all set up on iPhone so i can wifi from bed now!!! this is the life!!! had fierce trouble remembering my admin p/w though on the router though lol

If you've an IMAP account on your Mac you can just let iTunes sync the settings for it.

    Thanks Mobius and RedAlert :)

I will check my phone now and see what settings did it take from the synch. That link will help me too! :)

Here's a strange one, I have 4 accounts I check on my iPhone 3GS, they have been happily working for the last week, but today when I checked them one said the username and or password for XXX account is incorrect, I checked it again and it logged in!? Stwange????

Does having IMAP set up use more data when you are doing email on iPhone?

I guess it does, i mean its d/loading a copy of email i sent from my computer when i am on iphone. am i right in saying POP will just not duplicate like that? If i sent stuff from my computer and its in sent items, i dont want to see it again on my iphne if u get me.....i dont think i am fully getting to grips with this pop imap thing! Lol

I'd use IMAP where possible, unless you've a very small storage limit in your e-mail account. POP with more than one computer/device is always just a pain.

Is it possible to use the Iphone as a Blackberry? As in can I get email pushed straight through over the 3G network, without having to go into my Mail app and let it update?

The iPhone supports push email, yes. It depends on what mail service you're using though. Yahoo Mail, Exchange & Mobile Me support push. Gmail and Hotmail don't.

    Cheers for that.

Is the only difference between 'push' and 'pull' email that when using pull you have to wait at least 15mins for the iphone to retrieve the mail?

Pretty much. It might affect battery life, too.
