Dominica (NOT the Dominican Republic!) - anyone been there?

I'm thinking of Dominica as the place for a particularly far-flung holiday (a honeymoon, actually). I've been looking at sites like Responsible Travel (http://www.responsibletravel.com/Trip/Trip100769.htm) but would be interested in feedback from anyone who's actually been there.

It's supposed to be more low-key and less package-tourish than the rest of the Caribbean.

If you've been there, what's it like? Thanks.

Not from personal experience, but a friend was there and found the poverty to be a little overwhelming. She wouldn't be over sensitive either

Was that definitely Dominica? I know the Dom. Rep (where Budget Travel, for example, do packages) is supposed to be quite poor.

    It was definitely Dominica alright.

She picked it as it is primarily English speaking

I've been there. I like the place a lot: It is much poorer than most of that region, but I certainly wouldn't call it overwhelming.

It is, however, highly underdeveloped from a tourist perspective - the roads are bad (I don't recommend driving), it's a very sleepy island (there are only really one or two decent restaurants, and they close early), and there are no real white sand beaches.

That said, Dominica has great tropical rainforests, is cooler than other islands nearly, is much friendlier than the rest of the Eastern Caribbean and is generally cheaper too.

Honestly though, unless you're going there for a 'eco-reasons' (great diving, amazing eco lodges, awesome hiking - check out the boiling lake), I don't think it's worth the effort.

Me, I love it for the eco stuff (it might be my favourite Caribbean island), but if you're after a classic Caribbean (beaches, romantic restaurants etc.) honeymoon, but without the package tourism, I'd recommend Anguilla, which while normally expensive, is pretty good value right now with the dollar in the poo and the hotels discounting heavily.

{edit: just looked at your link - looks like a cracking holiday in Dominica!)
