I was wondering if anyone is using PS3 with mobile broadband connections(vodafone,meteor,3, etc) and what are the reactions to it, either good or bad?

Doubt it would be good.... it's only 1MB, I'd say you'd have issues a lot(in terms of Lag/Connectivity), i have with both Eircom/NTL and i've never had basic broadband with either

Eh i believe there are faster rates than 1MB

DO a search for mobile broadband in this section, you find loads of feedback

Ive always played with a 1mb line and have had no probs with lag or connecting, ping around the 30's.

@op I believe one of the issues with 3g broadband is the ping.Lot of game servers wont let you on with high ping so maybe try before you buy(o2 use to let you anyways)

My friend uses meteor and it works fine for him but has to run it through his laptop

I believe Vodafone Meteor and O2 all have to be used through your laptop for the ps3 and then use internet sharing from there,

Alternatively you can use a router that the mobile broadband plugs into.
I hear the DOvado one is good...

i use the vodastick with mine and it works fine so should be the same for you.

    • first connect to the internet on the laptop using the mobile broadband.
    • than depending on operating system,go to control panel-network and internet- (the name of your connection eg. 3G Connect.) - click properties on the connection.(right click or double click on the connection, then properties)
    • now go over to sharing , and click 'share this connection'. it should say to resart your connection, do this.
    • now grab a lan cable and connect your ps3 to your laptop using it.
    • now turn on the ps3 and go to networking and set up a new network.
    • click wired, and auto everything else. this should work.
everytime you want to play online ps3 you must have the internet connected on thelaptop and the laptop connected to the ps3.
    hope this works 4 ya.

    Works with 3 grand aswell.

It only seems to work if there are 2 LAN connections active, that involves ALOT of tweaking etc with my experiences.

Im nearly ready to throw the whole lot against the wall at this stage!! On Wednesday last i set the connection up and it worked but i had to load updates for Red Faction which took ages and then didnt finish. No big deal or so i taught. I did set up as it said as above and registered on the network. Now the ps3 just says that no ethernet cable is connected when it clearly is and the laptop is set to 'share'. I bought a new lan cable and got the faster of the 3g sticks.

Basically can anybody give me any pointers?
And what the hell is ping?

    Thanks all

How many LAN connections are showing on your PC once your ethernet cable is connected to the PS3?

When people say you need to enter a load of settings and stuff on the ps3, you dont.

The first step is to get the media server working (Windows media player 11) and then it should pretty much work ;)

Ok guys sorry to bother you again but.....

Have tried loadsa things now to try and get the ps3 to recognise the ethernet cable! When i go to 'sharing connection' there are 2 more lan connections(1394 and local) Ive also read that you must bridge 1 of these but when i share these it kicks me out of the shared 3g connection.
Have downloaded a proxy and windows 11.
Would it be the cable itself? I did go to game and buy a ps3 compatible lead.Funnily when i first tried i got into the ps3 shop and downloaded something else(cant remember now).
Maybe its the laptop but why would it let me on first then never recognise the ethernet cable again.

Im gonna throw the towel in but if you had any last suggestions i could try(except praying:)) that would be great

    Thanks:confused:

having problems even finding the sharing tab/button in the properities in the connection on my pc.

Tap 28,as said go to START then CONTROL PANEL then Scroll down to OR PICK A CONTROL PANEL ICON section click on NETWORK

CONNECTIONS you should have under LAN or HIGH SPEED INTERNET heading 2-3 sections and one should say WIRELESS NETWORK

CONNECTION on the heading and just under that it should say it is Connected, click the icon and a window opens up saying WIRELESS

NETWORK CONNECTION STATUS displaying your signal strength/connection activity etc, scroll down to the PROPERTIES bar on the

bottom left of the window click on it and another window opens displaying WIRELESS NETWORK CONNECTION PROPERTIES and it

should have INTERNET CONNECTION SHARING on the second half with 2 boxes to tick, tick both and OK/APPLY then that should have

your PC set, connect Ethernet from PC to PS3 and follow the rest as described earlier, which is pretty easy on the PS3 side.

Just gave a little different of a version described earlier as my own setup was a touch off!

    Hope it helps :)

Use a wireless router that has been tested with the mobile broadband. Carphone warehouse have one for 99 euro that they asure me has been tested with the Three mobile stick. Its important someone will stand over it as some of the mobile BB routers can be flakey.

I got 3 broadband after cutting down from a lovely DSL connection (flatmates moved out so less €) and I thought getting the PS3 up and running would be a nightmare but its not.
So in XP make sure your "LAN or Highspeed Internet" connection is active i.e., the Network Card (NIC) in your pc/laptop. The 1394 adapter is a firewire adapter in XP as far as I know so don't use this...use the physical network card (NIC) you'll be cabling from your PS3 too. Then as described before Start/Control Panel/Network Connections and right click your "3 USB Modem" and select Properties. Go to the Advanced tab and in XP (SP3) there are three check boxes one of which is "Allow other network users to connect through this computers internet connection". I checked this and it automatically assigned the 192.168.0.1 address to my physical NIC:

So from a command prompt if I check what has been assigned, an ipconfig command gives me this (note you don't have to do this bit...info only):

    IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1
    Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :
    DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 193.120.14.101
    193.120.14.100

I plugged my PS3 to my NIC using a CROSSOVER cable (google it) and allowed the PS3 setup wizard to autodetect the wired connection and to my suprise it actually worked. If you don't have a crossover cable ask the IT people in work/college whatever for a loan of one.
