Car door opens, school kid runs across road, over the bars, gravel rash from face to right ankle, oh and a broken wrist, bent bike and the little bo***x ran off leaving me in a heap on the road.

Coming down past West County hotel head down arse up heard a twang, wasn't sure what it was, went in Chapelisod gate of the park, swinging out of the bars on the rise up to St Mary's hospital and out pops front wheel, interesting collection of scars on knee. I could go on.

Obviously the answer to my question is yes!

    Keep the stories coming!

Is it serious panic when you know your going to crash and your feet are clipped in?

Not due to your feet being clipped in. They'll clip out quick enough!

More the thought of road rash & broken bones.

Being clipped in is not the forefront of your mind, from lengthy experience you will disengage automatically if the crash is fast and violent enough. There is often an "oh feck" moment where a second or two pass almost in slow motion and you know you are going down. I've had a few of them where I've just about recovered too. Seen other people go down right in front of me and you often get that in slow-mo too.

    Good video here:

Even this guy, who was on his back still clipped in, was out of them about a second later.

I have only crashed once when I launched myself into a ditch because my brakes failed.

Please tell me he was still pedalling while lying upside down.

Coming down Mt. Leinster, road was washed away, front wheel went into a hole, went over the top and broke collarbone. Then the usual road rash on ice and gravel.

Not having done any racing i was wondering if this video is a good representation of how close people cycle while racing?

No, I think generally they would be a lot closer than it appears in that video, I think the camera sort of makes it seem like they are further away from each other. He seems to be at the back of a group too, there's no-one particularly close to him on the rear.

Yeah - that group seems a bit all over the shop to be honest. Usually it's a good bit tighter than that.

    Only 2 of note:

Greasy road, going round roundabout to quick and wheels went from under me -gash on the chin, and 1 1/2 teeth missing.

touched handlebars with a friend, went down, teeth ok, gash above right eyebrow and a concussion.

    No broken bones yet though!

I just broke my arm on Saturday when my lockring slipped (I think) while turning and accelerating and I jack-knifed and had a fight with the road. Nice cast now. Bummer.

Sorry to hear that- what happened exactly, your cog slipped forward when you went to accelerate? I've had loosey cog on occasion but thankfully has never caused an accident, wouldn't be nice if it did it while you were standing trying to put the power down.

Yeah loose cog I guess, and yeah I was standing and BAM all of a sudden I'm sliding along the middle of the road (thankfully there was a median strip)

Have quite a few, but the one with the most visible scars was -

    30kph on gravel...
touched my brakes before a turn...
    front brake block stayed in...
front wheel went from 30kph - 0kph instantly...
I continued at 30kph, without the bike. Used my face as a brake instead.
