Ipod query: editing a tune

Can anyone advise how I might edit a track on i-tunes? I want to start the file at say 2mins 30 seconds, so that I can transfer it into my phone and use as a ringtone. Is this possible? Bit of a novice on these matters.

    Thanks

As long as it is not protected, you need software such as Audacity (free to download). If it is protected, burn it off to CD and re-rip it as an MP3. Then fire up Audacity to edit it.

Not that I would for a minute condone bypassing protection on protected songs.

    Ahem.

No there is a much easier way, using only iTunes.

You open the tune in iTunes, and set the start and end points you want in the song settings. Then convert it to mp3 in itunes. Then find the file and copy it (changing the extension to .m4r).

    You have a ringtone.

I think the track has to have been purchased via iTunes for that to work.

That rules out, well, all of my music. :p

Where is the "song settings" function where you can actually do this? Is this on a drop down tab or what? Can't see any option to do this (whether or not song has been purchased through itunes)

On a PC, anyway, you just right-click a track in your music library. The "Get Info" option at the top open a dialogue box that allows you to do loads of stuff.

Can you do that with a protected song? I didn't think you could.
