Mobile Bike Mechanic?

Considering the very few bike shops around. It would be handy if there was a mobile bike mechanic who could travel to you and fix up a bike. Save having to lug the bike across the city. Also be handy to have a mobile puncture repair service. If they can do it for cars, they can do it for bikes. You could probably do it from a bike. Just a thought if anyones out there doing nothing.

A mobile puncture repair service? How much are you willing to pay per puncture to make that econmically viable?

He'd want some pair of panniers to carry the spares /tools.

With the cost of running a business , transport etc you would be looking at about €40 per call out plus parts and then probably a lift home as it will be the one bit he doesn't have. I owned a bike shop in the 80's / 90's and while a mobile service can be done I don't think it's economically viable.

Not an entirely unfeasible idea apparently: this crowd in Brighton have been offering just such a service for some years now.

That's not quite the same thing - they take your bike back to the shop to fix it, I think the OP is talking about a service where they fix your bike on the spot.

I was thinking since theres no (real) bike shop in D.15 I have to lug the bike in the car to Lucan or Finglas to get it service'd or any work done on it. Now I usualy do my own bike but theres lots of people who wouldn't. Its a real pain having to take out all the stuff in the car, kids seats etc, then partially dismantle the bike to get it into the car.

Likewise I'd fix my own puncture, but I wonder how many don't, and would pay just to get someone to come to work and sort it out. Same thing as someone coming to clean your windows or cut your grass.

I wasn't thinking of someone going around on a bike as a call out. Though if a courier kept a few tubes with them, they could easily do call outs to offices. Theres no bike shop very near me at work.

That might work too ... especially if they can give same day turnaround for bikes collected before say ... 11 AM ...

Bike into work ... get bike picked by at work by the crowd .. work done and bike brought back the same day for cycle home

At a bike shop last week, I was told that they no longer fix punctures ... but to replace tubes, they charged 10 euro ... so if a van went around collecting bikes for fixes and also did some of the easier stuff then and there ... I can see this being a good business model.

Hi, we are a group of students who offer this service in our college for fellow students. Since college is over, we have decided to continue on the service and offer it to commuters during the summer.
We all have hands on bike shop experience, and can undertake almost any job either while you wait, gone for lunch or sitting in your office.
Because we travel by bike from the Northside of Dublin we can realistically be at any city centre location within the hour (Obviously if we don’t have another job on).
If parts are needed you can either supply them, or we can run to one of the many Bike shops around the city to get your part.
