Although I bought a Trek 1.5, if I was buying again I would have bought a good value carbon racer. First bikes that come to mine are the Cayo from Wiggle or the Planet X (which is just cracking value) , there's loads more out there.

So reconsider if you really want a Trek. The others are brilliant, having said that you won't be sorry with Trek.

7200 is on the ball there. For the same money that you'll buy the treks you'll have a decent carbon racer on the road with the same equipment. If your worried about buying from the web check out the CBoardman Team Carbon. A lot of bike for €1250!!

Ive had a Trek 1.9 for the last 18 months. Very good bike and since I was working in the UK when I bought it I got a very good price on it. Wandering about LBS here its still much more expensive that what I paid for it (by about 400 euro).
Its a bit left of centre but liking the colour of your bike is important since you may be looking at it long enough ;)

Like all other Treks they are nice bikes but overpriced. I'd be with 7200 and jollylee, I would find it hard to justify spending the sort of money on one of those that could get you entry-level carbon.

Cheers guys for the advice i can get the 1.9 for under 1500 euro with ultegra groupset, i know the RRP is near 1900 so im thinking its a good deal. I know i could get it cheaper in the uk but my lbs will look after my servicing for 2-3 years foc.

Regarding the other bikes with carbon there is only 5-10 year warranty on carbon bikes compared to lifetime with Trek any advice on carbon i would be afraid of cracks with carbon frames

I know there are good deals in the uk but i would prefere to stay in Ireland because of warranty and servicing in the future.

I think getting the bike in Ireland is a good idea re: servicing and potentially doing a deal on upgrades. When I bought it in the UK the bike shop couldnt be moved on switching parts. I upgraded the wheels, tyres, saddle and cassette immediately but HAD to take / pay for the ones that Trek provided. If you can get a bike shop here to upgrade you where you only pay the difference it's something to consider.
I went with the compact setup and the wheels that came with my Trek have been bullet proof on my winter bike fyi.

The Trek 1.9 is an excellent bike for under 1500 imho. I dont regret my purchase in the slightest.

    Good luck with your purchase

    A quick hijack here...

Anyone know what the difference in frame is between the 1.2, 1.5, 1.9?

Just wondering if its worth holding onto the frame and upgrading the rest?

    1.2 is "Alpha White" Aluminium.

1.5, 1.7 and 1.9 are "Alpha Black" and seem to be the same frame.

    From Trek:
Trek’s performance aluminum, Alpha White is straight gauge 6000-series aluminum with little or no forming.

Trek’s high-performance aluminum alloy, Alpha Black is 6000-series aluminum that has been hydroformed or mechanically formed to optimize the tube shape and butting profile. Alpha Black frames may be smooth welded for aesthetics.

The difference between the 1.2 and the others is actually pretty noticable in the frames, the 1.5 and up look more like the Madone with nicely shaped tubing. Butting means that the tubes are thinner in the middle than at the ends, saving weight- I don't know by how much but I would expect the Black frames are lighter too.

Cheers Blorg, carbon or nothing so... Wish I knew if I was gonna have a job next year or not, I'd nearly upgrade now while there's a bike shortage cos by the first week of oct when every one who bought through the cycle to work scheme realises that they have a bike worth €1000 sitting in the shed and have no intention of using it there maybe a glut in the second hand bike market.......

Best of luck in your trip
