Wheelie Bin Fire

My wheelie bin was set on fire last night. It was outside the front, in front of the gas meter.

The Bord Gais men who came to replace the meter and piping told me that there has been an increase of these recently. They push the bin up to the gas meter and set it on fire. If in a high-pressure gas area, the flames shoot up higher than the house.

I slept through everything, my bedroom being at the back of the house, and only woke when the firemen rang the doorbell after it was extinguished. Many many thanks to the gardai and the fire service. I hate to think how bad it could have been. The living room window cracked in the heat but didn't break so we were spared a fire in the house, and the gas didn't explode. Bord Gais were fantastic too. Everything is replaced and working again.

Has anyone heard of these happening, and any reasons why? (As much as vandalism has reasons)

PS - any ideas to prevent this kind of thing happening? Would security lights deter them?

    Scum.

A lady died in a fire caused by a wheelie bin in Clonmel last year.

    Unfortunately it does happen.

And put it in the back garden. Never, never leave it at the front of your house.

Not everyone can bring a bin into a back garden.
    A. No Backgarden
    B. Dont want to, due to smell etc.

I suppose the best thing is to lock your bins to a fence if possible, if you cant actually bring them out the back.

Wheelie bins are set on fire every night of the week. its a bloody nuisance when your on nights.

I've yet to figure out what class of an a**hole gets his rocks of randomly lighting wheelie bins. They eventually graduate to lighting skips left on the street. Gobsh*tes

Unfortunately when they are close to houses they do a lot of damage to pvc windows and soffits etc. even if there is no threat to the occupants themselves

Unfortunately we've had young fellas going through the back gardens & so I thought that with the wheelies there, they'd be able to climb up the pipes. It's a busy-ish road so I thought they'd be better there.

It is worrying that these bankers are deliberately pulling them close to the gas meters.

Chaining them to the fence is a good idea - I'll go get some bicycle locks. Thanks all, I really appreciate it.

Interesting article about wheelie fire spate

get a bycicle anchor and bolt that to the wall lock the bin to that
then get a chain and chain the bin closed so they cant open and get the lighter inside

Unfortunately, the latest trend in the design of "Duplex" and "town houses" is to have an alcove, designated for bins, in the same place as the Gas and Electricity meter.

It makes it so much easier for these toerags to blow up your entire house, while setting fire to your wheelie bin.

Fill your wheelie bin with petrol - that should do the trick.

Sorry to revive this again, but everyone is warning me to expect an 800eoro bill from the Fire Service - is this right? I'm in the Dublin City Council area. And terrified.....

DFB do not charge for domestic house fire calls afaik.

Your home insurance should cover this.

    That's some thread!

Is this what we get for a 'low' tax government? It's bloody shocking. I remember seeing a training video when I was in the NHS of an accident victim being trolleyed into Casualty (I mean the ER) with a staff member running beside it, asking for their insurance details.

I guess this is what Harney wants.

What did they spend the boomtime taxes on? It wasn't Education or Health or the Emergency Services or anything essential - whoops, roads were improved. For car drivers.

    Fixed your post.

Don't get me started on Harney.

Good , healthy example of a health minister.

    Not.
