    Hello everyone,

i joined jackie skellys in newbridge in march after getting a full time job in newbridge. unfortunately i will be made redundant come the beginning of september but have been offered a job in Galway which i want to accept.

the problem is that i can't find anyone to take my membership and my contract is not up until feburary. do you think they'll let me leave or would they expect me to drive from galway to newbridge just to use a gym?

i've heard jackie skelly can be pretty nasty if you want to leave before the contract expires but the people in newbridge seem really nice so i'm hoping they will let me leave

    Thanks in advance :)

They wont let you leave, staff been nice does not give them the power to cancel contracts, There is only 1 obvious thing to do.

Rush Boxing club and Rush Martial Arts head coach.

I am leaving the one in Greystones and I just sent an email to customer service giving my 2 months notice and they replied saying once the next 2 payments were taken I was done. I only renewed it in March. There were no hassles wih it.

So try sending an email to customer service. At least you'll have it in writing.

I think once you give them 2 months notice (and consequently 2 months payment), you can terminate the membership. Do it today though as it is the end of the month now, you don't want to be roped into a 3rd month!

    Wrong forum.

    Try here http://boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=580
There's threads in there about JS and membership cancellations.

    /thread.

There's more chance of the OP getting the answer they require in the Fitness forum than Consumer Issues....especially since it is direct relation to the Gym amd people's experiences!

If you send me your real name, I'll plant a death notice in the independent and i'll send a wreath to the gym carried by a sobbing widow type. I think that might be the only way you'll get out.

Is there a clause in the contract that releases the member after death? Because, if not, I'm not so sure ..... !! :D

I imagine you signed up to a fixed twelve month term, so are contractually locked in.

Now, you could be sneaky and just cancel your direct debit with the bank to stop paymenys going out. you could prob follow it up with a letter saying you have been made redundant and cannot pay it.

technically they can sue you for the money for the remaining term, but are JS really that bad? I can't imagine they are, especially if you have said you are redundant. 'Whatever about JS, their solicitors will not want to sue someobdy who they think will be unable to pay up!

Does anyone else find it weird how quick people are to advise cancelling a legally binding contract?

Every bitches and moans about JS practices, but then advice a similar course of action.

    Haven't used this in a while;

i never advocated cancellation. Its not possible at the moment, due to said legally binding nature. I'm advocating default. Its sneakier

I agree, if you sign up, you should realise that you are making a long term committment, which is why i generally don't have any sympathy for the "JS are evil for holding me to a legally binding promise i made of my own free will" type threads.

But c'mon, OP lost her job and has to move to Galway. Surely if anybody is deserving of my law breaking expertise, its her!
